      As with most people. my first encounters with others online were in the chat rooms. I was happy there for a little while but then I discovered the newsgroups.
        I left the chat rooms altogether and began reading the newsgroups regularly. Still just a lurker, I often saw posters talk about 'trolls' and 'flamers'. Determined to find out what a 'troll' was, I decided to do a little investigating.
        The first place I came across both trolls and flamers was in the Mafia newsgroup. There was quite a battle going on there and I didn't want to miss out on what looked to be a great deal of fun. I watched as the residents of the Mafia NG were being devoured by a group of trolls calling themselves the TDT and a number of freelance flamers. I wanted to jump right into the heat of battle, but still wasn't sure of myself. Was I a 'troll' or a 'flamer', and what was the difference between the two? I still needed to learn a little more before I would make my first post.
      I watched and began to understand that those who called themselves 'trolls' were into infiltrating a newsgroup to break it apart. I decided that I was more comfortable as a 'flamer' who chose simply to irritate posters to get a few laughs. Actually, what seemed most fun was to irritate the TROLLS.
      I've come a long way from my first posts as a flamer. I've made a few friends and a few enemies along the way, but I still enjoy this hobby on a regular basis. Hey, what's not to like when it's all in fun?
