Ashley spent most of his time just about surviving
shipboard life. He was regularly sent up the mast by the first
lieutenant, Mr Alexander. Who maintained that it would cure the
midshipman of his fear of heights. Ashley gradually learned his way
around the ship and his place in its hierarchy. He progressed from
being given only the most simple tasks and was given more
responsibility once he had found his feet. He also succeeded in
avoiding the wrath of Mr Frost. The majority of the days the young
midshipman was threatened with being squashed like a bug by the tyrant
of the middy’s berth. Ashley found a secret ally in Mr Blue, who would
stick up for him if who he was unfairly treated by his messmates. The
days were generally monotonously the same, but there were a few
notable incidents that are worth mentioning in this narrative.
