The Scottish Mining Museum
Established in 1984, and located at the Lady Victoria Colliery in Newton Grange (7 miles south of Edinburgh - only a short distance from The Walltower), the museum offers a unique insight into the history of coal mining in Scotland. The museum includes: - 1. A 3-storey visitor centre. 2. 2 major exhibitions - The, "Story of coal" and, "A race apart". 3. A, "Hands on" operation centre. 4. A re-created underground roadway and coalface. 5. The pithead. 6. The huge winding machine. 7. 2 audio-visual shows. 8. A restaurant and shop. Overall the museum transports you back to the heyday of Scottish mining, trying to re-create the sites, sounds and smells of a working mine. The museum is very much an interactive museum, encouraging you to fully experience the hardship of the work and the camaraderie of the workforce. All the guides are ex-miners, listen to the tales they tell of life underground. They will re-create this recent slice of industrial history in a manner that only those who were there can. The museum is only a short distance from the Walltower and is well worth a visit. The owner of the Walltower (Ron) personally recommends a visit and views the museum as the best visitor attraction in the Edinburgh area.
