STING TIMELINE

1951 Oct 2 Gordon Matthew Sumner born in Wallsend.

1959 - Gordon's Uncle John leaves his guitar in the family house before emigrating to Canada. Gordon given permission to use it

1971-1974 - Attends teacher training college in Newcastle upon Tyne. Plays bass for jazz groups The Phoenix Jazzmen and the River City Jazzmen. Acquires nickname when ribbed by members of the Phoenix about a black and yellow pullover he wore."

1974 - Begins teaching full time. Founder member of rock/jazz group Last Exit

1976 Sting quits teaching to move to London with Last Exit. The group fragments.

1977 Jan - Drummer Stewart Copeland recruits Sting and guitarist Henri Padovani to form The Police

1977 May - The Police's first single Fall Out is released

1977 July - Andy Summers joins The Police replacing Henri Padovani the following month

1978 April - The Police's single Roxanne is released

1978 Sept - Sting lands first film role in Quadrophenia

1978 Oct - Sting acts in Radio On

1978 Nov - The Police album Outlandos d'Amour is released

1979 Aug - Single Can't Stand Losing You is re-released and goes to No 2 in UK charts

1979 Sept - Single Message In A Bottle is released

1979 Oct - The Police album Reggatta de Blanc is released

1980 Oct - The Police album Zenyatta Mondatta is released

1981 Oct - The Police album Ghost In The Machine is released

1981 Nov - Sting stars in Artemis 81

1982 Sept - Sting plays lead in Brimstone And Treacle

1983 May - Sting stars in Dune

1983 June - The Police album Synchronicity is released

1984 Sept - Sting stars in The Bride.

1985 March - Though The Police have never officially split up, this date marks a Police-less world

1985 June - Solo album The Dream Of The Blue Turtles is released

1985 Dec - Sting acts in Plenty

1986 - Subject of documentary Bring On The Night. Album of the same name

1987 - Sting stars in Stormy Monday

1987 Oct - Solo album Nothing Like The Sun is released

1988 April - Sting stars in Julia And Julia

1988 March - Spanish/Portuguese language min-album Nada Como El Sol is released

1989 Sept - Sting stars in The Threepenny Opera on Broadway
