STING TIMELINE 1951 Oct 2 Gordon Matthew Sumner born in Wallsend. 1959 - Gordon's Uncle John leaves his guitar in the family house before emigrating to Canada. Gordon given permission to use it 1971-1974 - Attends teacher training college in Newcastle upon Tyne. Plays bass for jazz groups The Phoenix Jazzmen and the River City Jazzmen. Acquires nickname when ribbed by members of the Phoenix about a black and yellow pullover he wore." 1974 - Begins teaching full time. Founder member of rock/jazz group Last Exit 1976 Sting quits teaching to move to London with Last Exit.
