Phases of the Goddess
The phases of the moon are very important within the Wiccan religious framework, as they represent cycles of nature as well as the phases of human life.
Waxing Moon - "Maiden"
The Waxing Moon is symbolic of the Maiden Goddess (also called the Virgin Goddess), the first stage of three for the Triple Goddess. It is the period of transition from New Moon to Full Moon.
Full Moon - "Mother"
The Full Moon is the peak of the life of the Triple Goddess. In this form, she is the Great Mother who gave us life. This phase of the moon represents fertility and child-bearing, and is rightfully the phase in which most Moon/Goddess -worship is conducted (since most Pagan religions are fertility-based).
Waning Moon - "Crone"
The third phase of the Moon and final phase of the Triple Goddess. This is the pariod of transition from Full Moon to New Moon. This phase is symbolic of wisdom
New Moon - "Hag"
The New Moon is both the first and final phase of the Goddess. This phase represents both death and rebirth - whether it be in the form of trees shedding leaves for the winter and growing them back in spring - or the process of reincarnation. The New Moon may also symbolize the final phase of the human life.
