Accomplishments: Mitsuharu Misawa was an amateur wrestler ever since he was young. He actually placed fifth at a 1980 Freestyle World Championship for junior age groups. Misawa was trained professionally by Dick "The Destroyer" Beyer, Shohei Baba, and Dory Funk Jr. His professional debut was on August 21, 1981 for All Japan. In the start of Misawa's career in All Japan, he wrestled as the second generation Tiger Mask, Tiger Mask II. In a tag team match, Misawa unmasked, and said that he wanted to move to the top of the Heavyweight tree in All Japan. This led to a feud with Jumbo Tsurta. On August 22, 1992, Misawa defeated Stan Hansen to end Hansen's third Triple Crown Reign. This started a fury of Triple Crown wins for Mitsuharu Misawa. In 1994, Misawa began to team up with a newcomer by the name of Kenta Kobashi. Misawa won another Triple Crown in 1995. In 1997, he won his third. His third Triple Crown Title reign would last 17 months, before he was defeated by Toshiaki Kawada in the Tokyo Dome. Misawa then won his fourth Triple Crown Championship by defeating Kenta Kobashi. To win his fifth Triple Crown Championship, Misawa defeated Vader, and held it for eight months until dropping it back to Vader. By this time, since Giant Baba had passed away, Mrs. Baba gave Misawa some of the booking duties for All Japan. She really began to annoy Misawa, and this made himself, along with other natives leave, and create NOAH. Misawa still books for NOAH, and also wrestles. He has held many titles, including the GHC Heavyweight Title in NOAH. Misawa is one of, if not, the greatest Japanese wrestler in the history of this business. Japanese wrestling surely would not be the same if it was not for Mitsuharu Misawa. Written by: Matt Lytle |
