Here's another picture I took from the landing boat. The downtown area is almost blindingly bright with lights during the celebration of Chinese New Year. If you're a bargain hunter, it's a good time to be in Hong Kong -- yes, they've got New Year's sales just like we do, but they've got items that are a bit more expensive in the US.

After a month or more underway, many submariners seek the health benefits of fresh air outside the confines of the boat.

I took a day to visit the Po Lin Monastery, located on a neighboring island to Hong Kong, to see the bronze statue of Buddha and pay my respects to the shrine. The statue is the largest bronze seated Buddha in the world, and sits atop 234 steps. At the top, there is a museum and reliquary, and the view of the surrounding countryside is breathtaking. They also offer a lunch at the base of the hill in the monastery itself for about $100HK (make it around $12US) which is quite tasty if you like vegetarian food (and pretty good even if you don't)

A permanent resident atop Victoria Peak in the middle of Hong Kong Island. The view is impressive from up there, but my camera simply wasn't equipped to capture it adequately, and the scanned versions of the images leave something to be desired. I'll show you the scrapbook next time you're at my house. In any case, this fellow is outside the Ripley's Believe It Or Not museum on Victoria Peak. There's also a Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum there, and two full-sized malls.
