In-situ characterisation of roof rock mass using Borehole indenter for assessment of strata behaviour during final extraction
Characteristics of overlying roof rock mass controls the behaviour of yielding foundations in and around a coal mining face. Therefore, conventionally, fresh core samples of the strata is procured through drilling and the samples are brought to laboratory for testing of physico-mechanical properties which ultimately reflects the characteristic of the roof strata. This is a well established practice but many times laboratory testing becomes a time consuming process and the strata need to be characterized there at the site. For this purpose the department has added a new facility for in-situ characterisation of roof rock mass using Borehole indenter. This facility is added under modernization scheme of CSIR and the recently developed Bore-hole (NX size) Rock Indetor by Rock-Test, Canada has been procured and being used for quick in situ characterization of roof strata.
