The
colors of the Austrian coat of arms date from the seal of Duke
Frederick II in 1230. With the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire
in 1918, the new Austrian republic adopted the red-white-red flag.
The white is sometimes said to represent the Danube River. The
imperial eagle, with one or two heads, has been an Austrian symbol
for centuries. |
