In
March 1822, during the revolt against Ottoman rule, the first
Greek national flags were adopted; the most recent revision to the
flag was made on Dec. 22, 1978. The colors symbolize Greek
Orthodoxy while the cross stands for "the wisdom of God,
freedom and country." The stripes are for the battle cry for
independence: "Freedom or Death." |
