Down the Slippery Slope and into the Zoo

I call it the Zoo. Others call it the nanny state, etc. It amounts to authoritarian power reducing liberty. Many have the age old feeling that elites must direct the masses and collect privilege for doing so.

The authoritarian nature of government supplies most denizens of government with incentive to feel that more power will help them govern more efficiently. As a result, liberty is not the or even a primary goal of government. The welfare of the people, as defined and administered by government elites, is primary. Good government is becoming analogous to a modern and well administered zoo where food, medical, parental style protection, and the best possible safely enclosed environment is supplied.

Modern day zoo animals, compared to wild animals, have better food more regularly, are safer, and receive medical care. Does it follow that zoo animals live better lives than wild animals?

Is the unprecedented general well-being, achieved in the USA, do to individual freedom or government direction? Is wealth do to the free exercise of labor or the skilled oversight of politicians? Are we willing to accept the costs of freedom or is the zoo better for us?

If the answer lies somewhere in the middle, where do we draw the line?
