Standard Engineering Equipment

Hand Tools:

Antimatter Regulator. An antimatter regulator is a device that is used to regulate the flow of antimatter. During Wesley Crusher's first week at Starfleet Academy, Adam Martoni reprogrammed Crusher's sonic shower to cover him with mud. But Wesley managed to give it back to Martoni, when he reprogrammed an antimatter regulator to spray chili sauce on Martoni.

Beacon, Emergency . Emergency beacons are large hand-held lamps that can be used to illuminate dark surroundings, similar to palm beacons and SIMs beacons. The beacon can be modified to emit only certain wavelenghts of light. In 2367, Data modified a emergency beacon to work on ultraviolet light. In order to do so, he had to replace the regular emitter module.
Beacon, Palm. A palm beacon is a flashlight-like device held in the palm of the hand, often used by away teams in dark areas. Palm beacons were used when away teams beamed down to the dark and foggy planet Tarchannen III. Susanna Leijten later advised turning off the beacons as the light was frightening the Tarchannen III species. In 2368, Data modified a palm beacon to emit an optical burst pattern that would counteract the effects of the Ktarian game. Deep Space 9's corridors were equipped with storage lockers (similar to weapons lockers) that held three palm beacons and two tricorders.
Beacon, SIMs . A SIMs beacon is a flashlight-like device that is worn like a wrist band, often used by away teams in dark areas. SIMs beacons were the improved successor to the palm beacons, leaving the user's hands free for other tasks. In 2376, Tuvok was in a phaser fight with his impersonator, Mobar, he used the opportunity afforded him when Mobar was admiring him to shine his SIMs beacon in his eyes and stun him. In 2377, Crewman Yosa was attempting to fix a power fluctuation in a Jefferies tube when someone that had been attacking former-Maquis (later found to be Tuvok under mind control) blinded him in a Jefferies tube before he could escape, and put him in a coma. In an alternate timeline where Voyager was destroyed and frozen on a planet in the Takara sector, Harry Kim and Chakotay were equipped with a future configuration of the SIMs beacon, no longer using an elastic-strap, but a solid rectangular band around the arm. Instead of two light sources, it had a single larger and more sleek one.

Bio-Neural Gel Pack.. Bio-neural gel packs are a form of computer technology used by Starfleet, first developed circa 2370. The gel packs form the basis of the bio-neural circuitry, which is essentially an organic computer system. The packs contain neural fibers surrounded in a blue gel with metallic interfaces on the top and bottom. They help store more information and operate at faster speeds than isolinear circuitry. The fibers in an individual gel pack are capable of making billions of connections, thus generating an incredibly sophisticated and responsive computing architecture. This kind of organic circuitry allows computers to 'think' in very similar ways to living organisms; by using 'fuzzy logic', they can effectively operate by making a 'best guess' answer to complex questions rather than working through all possible calculations. This is due in part to the inherent nature of organic neural systems to correlate chaotic patterns that yet elude the capacities of conventional hardware. The USS Voyager was one of the first vessels equipped with the technology. Due to the fact that organic matter cannot be stored at quantum levels, gel packs cannot be replicated. Voyager stored their spare gel packs in engineering locker Gamma 5. Like other biological forms, gel packs are susceptible to bacteria and viruses. They were infected with bacteria due to cheese created by Neelix. A gel pack in the mess hall was infected with a macrovirus, and led to an outbreak when it ruptured. During a voyage through a Mutara-class nebula, the gel packs began to fail due to subnucleonic radiation. Bio-neural gel pack sequence 6-Theta-9 is located on Deck 4 of an Intrepid-class starship. Gel packs can be modified by injecting a type of serum into the packs in order to return a ship caught in numerous temporal periods, such as caused by a temporal anomaly, to a single temporal period. This process returns the ship to a few seconds before the anomaly occurs. When members of the Hierarchy species kidnapped Captain Kathryn Janeway, The Doctor was forced to steal gel packs by posing as B'Elanna Torres. However when Janeway was rescued by Tom Paris and Tuvok the gel packs were returned to Voyager.

Calculation Device. A calculation device is a hand-held utility that is used to calculate numbers. A calculation device was used by Spock while making damage and repair estimates to the USS Enterprise in 2269.

Coil Scanner. A coil scanner is a type of hand-held sensor used by Starfleet. It can be modified to detect the quantum resonance oscillator inside a transporter module. In 2372, the crew of the USS Voyager used a coil scanner to search for a transporter module stolen by Seska.

Coil Spanner. A coil spanner is an engineering tool with various uses. In 2372, Lon Suder murdered fellow USS Voyager crewman Frank Darwin by striking him in the back of the head with a two-kilogram coil spanner. Chief O'Brien asked Worf to give him the coil spanner when he repaired a console on the OPs. On a salvage mission to Empok Nor in 2373, Boq'ta asked Amaro to retrieve a coil spanner so he could loosen a bolt. Amaro returned with a flux coupler instead, to find Boq'ta killed by a Cardassian soldier. On Enterprise (NX-01), Lorian used a coil spanner to make adjustments to a plasma injector. In 2375, Ezri Dax used a coil spanner to tune a phase amplifier on AR-558.

Desealer/Desealing Rod. A desealer is a device that can unscramble most locking mechanisms. It takes some time to do so, and one must be careful not to get caught while the desealer does its work. Quark wanted to use a desealer to open the doors to the chemist's shop when he and Rom broke in, but Rom had enough technical expertise that he was able to open them quicker. This disturbed Quark, who did not feel that his "idiot" brother could be trusted after seeing such ingenuity. A desealing rod is a small, hand-held tool used to open locks and deseal doors. In 2370, Rom used a desealing rod that Nog made to break into the ship's store on Deep Space 9 and retrieve a strongbox hidden by Vaatrik during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. Rom was able to deseal the door in less than ten seconds.

Duotronic Probe. A Duotronic Probe is an engineering tool used aboard Federation starships to regulate plasma flow. However, the gravitic caliper is a more precise instrument. The Doctor used the same device for a medical scan in "Workforce".

Dynoscanner. While scanning Ceti Alpha V in conjunction with Project Genesis, the USS Reliant detected a minor energy flux reading on one of the ship's dynoscanners, leading the crew to believe that the scanner was out of adjustment, that it contained life or that a particle of preanimate matter was caught in the matrix. While attempting to pinpoint a chlorinide leak in the cargo bay of the USS Enterprise-D, Geordi La Forge suggested that maybe she should try a dynoscanner, because the tricorder was not picking up what it was they were seeking.

EJ-7 interlock. An EJ-7 interlock is an engineering tool used to access or close panels. It is made up of tritanium composites. With an EJ-7 interlock, one could access every critical system on Deep Space 9. When Miles O'Brien was assisting Neela in repairing a system in Odo's security office, O'Brien remarked that an EJ-7 interlock would be required to close the panel they were working on. While looking for the interlock in his kit, he realized that it had gone missing. After a search, they found it in an access tunnel, melted into slag due to exposure to plasma.

Electro-Dynamic Probe. An electro-dynamic probe is a tool. Kovin owned an electro-dynamic probe equipped with a monofilament stimulator. During his investigation into Kovin's possible assault of Seven of Nine in 2374, the Doctor saw the probe as corroboration for Seven's story.

Electromagnetic Synthemometer. An electromagnetic synthemometer was a diagnostic device from the mid-24th century. This hand tool measured the rate of electromagnetic activity of a mechanical device. Ratings were either positive or negative with positive being a good result. In 2364, a technician aboard the USS Enterprise-D was using this tool in the re-assembly of Lore.

Emergency Hand Actuator. Emergency hand actuators are small devices used to open doors aboard Starfleet vessels in the event of power loss. They are stored at convenient locations near turbolifts, Jefferies tubes, and other vital areas. Use of the device involves attaching it to either side of the door, then pulling the door open.

Flux coordinating sensor. A flux coordinating sensor was a hand-held device consisting of an upper section readout screen with four lights on the right and a lower section with ten buttons and five sliders. It was angled at its mid-point by about 30 degrees. Wesley Crusher examined such a device in 2364 while in the Starfleet Academy testing area at the Relva VII starbase.

Flux Coupler. A flux coupler is an engineering tool that looks similar to a coil spanner. During a salvage mission to Empok Nor in 2373, Elim Garak killed Amaro with a flux coupler while under the influence of a psychotropic drug.

Gamma Ray Spectrometer. A gamma ray spectrometer is an instrument that analyzes gamma rays to determine the abundance and distribution of radioactive elements, usually on the surface of a planet. Since the radioactive isotopes of many elements normally make up a certain set percentage of the nonradioactive isotope, these readings can be used to infer the amount of the ordinary elements present. The instrument is therefore useful to determine the state of about twenty elements on the periodic table including silicon, oxygen, iron, magnesium, potassium, aluminum, calcium, sulfur, and carbon. A gamma ray spectrometer was among the tools included on the United States space probe, Ranger 3. The spectrometer was labeled in a diagram of the Ranger 3 probe stored in the USS Enterprise's library computer, which was among the materials viewed by the Talosians in 2254.

Gravitic Caliper. A gravitic caliper is a type of engineering tool used aboard Federation starships in the late 24th century. It uses an effect of gravity, and provides a more precise adjustment to a plasma flow than a duotronic probe, as pointed out by Vorik in a conversation with B'Elanna Torres in 2373.

Gravimetric scanner. A gravimetric scanner is a piece of technology which can be used to predict the outcome of dabo games. Constable Odo, while stuck in his monoform shape, once saw a pair of Yridians using a gravimetric scanner to cheat in Quark's. As he was on the second level at the time, he instinctively leapt after them when they ran, intending to turn into a Tarkalean condor in mid-air. The constable was humiliated, despite Captain Sisko's supportive attitude.

Graviton Emitter. A graviton emitter is a device that emits gravitons. There are several sizes of emitters, some the size of small starships others that are handheld. Graviton emitters were standard equipment aboard Federation starships like the USS Enterprise-D. They could be calibrated to emit different kinds of graviton beams including full spectrum pulse compression. Geordi La Forge used the graviton emitters to stop solanagen-based lifeforms from entering the universe through a spatial rupture. Deep Space 9 had graviton emitters on its Habitat ring. In mid-2373, they were used to fire a phase-conjugate graviton beam at the Bajoran wormhole. The emitters were sabotaged by the Changeling impersonating Doctor Julian Bashir. Several weeks later, a customer at Quark's used a handheld graviton emitter to manipulate the Dabo table to help his friend win.

Hyperspanner. A hyperspanner is an adaptable multipurpose engineering tool carried aboard starships. One of its many uses include repairing communication systems. While exploring a 31st century time pod, Commander Tucker and Lieutenant Reed discovered an access tunnel that seemed to drop several dozen feet, much more then the size of the pod would allow. To prove it wasn't a hologram of some kind, he dropped a hyper spanner down it. After it hit the bottom, he used it as an excuse to go down and retrieve it. While being rehabilitated for Engineering duties after experiencing 25 years of confinement in his mind, Miles O'Brien identified one of the tools in a set that Jake Sisko used to try to help him regain his memory. In 2374, Chakotay used a hyperspanner to repair the communications systems aboard a shuttlecraft. In 2374, while trapped in a restrictive environmental suit, B'Elanna Torres said that it would be much easier to interplex the comm systems in it if she had a hyperspanner. In 2377, The Doctor created a holonovel, Photons Be Free, that portrays an under-appreciated holographic doctor who is belittled and oppressed by his crew. In the story, B'Elanna Torres' counterpart, "Torrey," openly proclaims to the protagonist that he is merely a tool, comparing him to a hyperspanner.

Interphasic Compensator. An interphasic compensator is a Starfleet engineering tool. When a feedback loop developed in the USS Defiant's warp coils in 2372, Captain Benjamin Sisko used an interphasic compensator to shunt the excess power from the warp core to the deflector.

Interphasic scanner. The interphasic scanner (also known as an IP scanner) is a device capable of revealing objects that are not perceptible by normal humanoid senses or standard scans. Using the IP scanner, the crew of the Enterprise-D discovered parasites existing slightly out of phase with normal space. The parasites fed on the cellular peptides of the crew.

Iso-Modulator. An iso-modulator is a type of tool used aboard starships. Seven of Nine had an iso-modulator that she had enhanced to correct hull ablation. In 2376, she took this tool with her on a mission to explore a collapsing micro-nebula near Norcadia Prime, in case their shuttlecraft encountered a meteroid stream. Tom Paris compared her preference for that specific iso-modulator to B'Elanna Torres' Toby the targ.

Isolinear Spanner. An isolinear spanner is an engineering tool. Lieutenant William Chapman was working with an isolinear spanner on USS Voyager in 2375.

Isolitic Converter. An isolitic converter is an engineering tool, which can be used to unfuse engine controls. On the mimetic USS Voyager in 2375, before going on her honeymoon, B'Elanna Torres warned Seven of Nine that the isolitic converter was "temperamental".

Laser Micrometer. A laser micrometer is a specialized instrument used for non-contact measurement and control in use aboard NX-class starships.

Laser Welder. A laser welder was a tool used to join two or more parts. It produced a continuous welding beam and was normally used for welding metal together. In 2369, a group of mercenaries boarded the USS Enterprise-D during preparations for a baryon sweep. The terrorist Devor attacked Captain Picard from behind with a laser welder, but Picard disabled him using a Vulcan nerve pinch. On another occasion, once the baryon sweep had begun, Picard ran across Devor once again; Picard asked Devore what he was doing on the starship and threatened him with the laser welder.

Magna-Spanner. A magna-spanner is an Engineering tool in use since the 2320s. In 2327, Cortin Zweller used a magna-spanner to manipulate a dom-jot table to his advantage prior to a game with some Nausicaans.

Mass Spectrometer. A mass spectrometer is a device invented in the 20th century on Earth that is still used in the 24th century aboard Federation starships, and that can measure the mass-to-charge ratio of ions. When Doctor Beverly Crusher was caught in a warp bubble created by her son, she imagined Geordi La Forge running a mass spectrometer on all particulates in sickbay where she saw an energy vortex, all to no avail. When the the dilithium chamber hatch aboard the USS Enterprise-D exploded in 2367, La Forge and Data did mass spectrometer readings of the remains of the hatch to see if a chemical explosive was used, but did not find anything suspicious. They later, by means of a microtomographic analysis of the dilithium chamber and the hatch mounting, detected sub-micron fractures in the metal casing, a breakdown in the atomic cohesive structure. This meant that neutron fatigue caused the explosion, not sabotage by the Klingon exobiologist J'Dan, as was originally suspected.

Micro-Caliper. A micro-caliper is a small tool. While attempting to diffuse the Romulan mine that had attached to the hull in 2152, Captain Jonathan Archer used a micro-caliper to work on the mine. In 2152, Commander Charles Tucker used a micro-caliper to adjust a component on a 31st century communications beacon. In 2374, Entharan arms dealer Kovin used a micro-caliper to remove the guidance system casing of his particle beam rifle while showing it to Seven of Nine. In Seven's false memory where he assaulted her, Kovin used the micro-caliper to remove her ocular implant.

Micro-Optic Drill. A micro-optic drill is a small hand-held device that can drill holes of microscopic sizes into solid materials. In 2368, Geordi La Forge hooked up a plasma inverter and a laser scanner and used the two combined devices to send enough plasma through a hole, created by means of a micro-optic drill to temporarily plasma-shock Deanna Troi and Miles O'Brien who were taken over by Ux-Mal criminals.

Micro-Resonator. A micro-resonator is a tool used by Starfleet engineers to degauss relatively small devices. For larger objects, a magneton scanner. In 2371, as part of a crash course in Starfleet training, Tuvok had Crewman Chell degauss the transporter pad with a micro-resonator to learn "patience". Tuvok estimated it would take approximately 26.3 hours to complete; Torres stated that the magneton scanner would take five minutes.

Microdyne Coupler. A microdyne coupler is a device that could be used to delete information on a computer, leaving little or no trace. In 2154, Lieutenant Reed used one of these to delete information stored in a data recorder which the crew of Enterprise had retrieved from the wreckage of a Rigelian freighter. Reed's attempt to erase the information was unsuccessful, leading Captain Archer to learn that the lieutenant was holding back important information from the Starfleet crew. This device may have been supplied to Reed by Section 31. In 2375, Crewman Kellin told Ezri Dax to get a microdyne coupler and recalibrate a transtator.

Optical Data Detwork Recoupler. An optical data network recoupler is a tool used by engineers to reconnect broken ODN cables.

Optronic Coupler. An optronic coupler is a tool used by Starfleet engineers for repair of equipment. Miles O'Brien asked Nog for an optronic coupler while working on the plasma distribution manifold system on Deep Space 9, right before asking for the phase decompiler tool.

Parametric Scanner. A parametric scanner is a type of hand-held engineering device used for aligning phase coils. In 2152, Trip Tucker used one to scan Jonathan Archer's physical dimensions into the computer during his attempt to redesign Enterprise's captain's chair.

Pen. A pen was a writing instrument used on paper. Onaya gave a pen used by the writer Revalus to Jake Sisko to write Anslem. Chakotay used a pen to write down his memories so he could remember a Ramuran female.

Phase Coil Resonator. A phase coil resonator is a type of engineering tool. In 2370, Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres used one while trying to construct a prototype Automated Personnel Unit.

Phase Compensator. A phase compensator can refer to an engineering tool or a component on Federation starships such as the Intrepid-class. During the USS Voyager's maintenance overhaul in 2377, Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres ordered that a new phase compensator be installed on a relay. Later that year, when Voyager was trapped in the Void, Captain Kathryn Janeway inadvertantly gave Seven of Nine's favorite phase compensator to the Nygeans, so that they could repair their sensor array.

Phase Decompiler. A phase decompiler is a Starfleet engineering tool. Chief Miles O'Brien used a phase decompiler while working on the plasma distribution manifold system on Deep Space 9 in 2373.

Phase Modulator. A phase modulator can refer to several different devices, part of a phaser assembly but is also a type of engineering tool. In 2374, Lieutenant Commander Tuvok used a phase modulator when preparing a gravimetric torpedo for the enactment of the Omega Directive.

Plasma Extinguisher. A plasma extinguisher is a hand-held instrument utilized aboard Starfleet starships to fight plasma fires. In 2373 aboard the USS Voyager, a holographic version of a plasma extinguisher was created for Tom Paris and Tuvok to extinguish a plasma fire while they were attempting to escape from the Insurrection Alpha program.

Plasma Torch. The plasma torch is a Starfleet cutting tool that uses a stream of plasma to cut through solid objects. Lieutenant Malcolm Reed used one to reach a jammed access port on Enterprise's outer hull in February of 2154. In 2375, the USS Voyager received a distress call from the lost USS Equinox. On a search and rescue mission aboard the Equinox, Ensign Harry Kim had to use a plasma torch to remove debris from a pinned down Noah Lessing.

Polarity Scanner. A polarity scanner is a piece of technology carried aboard Starfleet starships. When scanning, it produces a series of different colored beams, with the purple beam used to identify invidium. In 2366, Geordi La Forge used a polarity scanner to illuminate invidium from a Mikulak container.

Radiation Meter. A radiation meter is a small hexagonal pin worn by officers serving aboard Terran Empire starships, used to monitor how much radiation the person absorbs, usually from the unsafe warp cores used aboard Terran Empire ships. In 2155 aboard the ISS Enterprise (NX-01), T'Pol and Commander Tucker were working on adapting the Suliban cloaking device to operate with Enterprises systems. Tucker stopped her when he noticed that she had forgotten to wear a radiation meter, a safety precaution that he believes is vital. Trip subsequently orders Crewman Biggs to provide her with one, so that she did not suffer the adverse effects of delta radiation exposure, an experience that scarred Tucker for life. T'Pol ignored the Commander's warnings, but wore the radiation meter anyway.

Remote Control. A remote control is a hand-held device for controlling mechanisms across a varied distance, predating voice-command technology. Jonathan Archer used to fly model starships by remote control with his father. B'Elanna Torres gave a television with a remote control to Tom Paris as a gift. Although she attempted to give the TV set a 1950s authenticity, remote controls were not available with TV sets until the early-1960s. Doctor McCoy and Ensign Nog operated neural stimulators by remote control to give motion to mindless bodies.

Self-sealing Stem Bolts. Self-sealing Stem bolts are a type of connective device which is self sealing and does not require welding or additional outside attachment, replacing traditional stem bolts that were introduced sometime prior to the 2150s. In 2369, Jake Sisko and Nog traded 5,000 wrappages of Cardassian yamok sauce for 100 gross self-sealing stem bolts, to a Lissepian freighter captain. In 2371, an opportunity presented itself to Quark to get rid of the stash of self-sealing stem bolts sitting in Cargo Bay 11. He offered them to a wealthy prospective buyer named Emi for ten bars of gold-pressed latinum. Emi claimed that with the stem bolts, her family would be able to triple production of reverse-ratcheting routing planers. When the Defiant returned from escorting a convoy, Worf complained that warriors should be doing "great deeds" and not guarding "shipments of stem bolts". When explaining his reasons to Dr. Bashir for taking a teaching post at Starfleet Academy, he quipped "somebody has to teach you officers the difference between a warp matrix flux capacitor and a self-sealing stem bolt."

Sonic Driver. A sonic driver is a standard tool used in the Federation during the 2360s. Commander William Riker requested a sonic driver from Chief Engineer Sarah MacDougal to use during their combined attempt to deactivate a force field that was created by Wesley Crusher in Main Engineering that was preventing crew access to vital ship systems.

Spectral Micrometer. A spectral micrometer is a device used to measure spectral bands of light that are diffused through many of the known crystals found within the Federation. These include diamonds, dilithium, and the many forms of amethyst. Within Starfleet, spectral micrometers are used to ensure the quality of dilithium and other crystals used throughout starship operations. Outside of Starfleet, these instruments may be found in any jewelry shop within the Federation.

Submicron Scanner. A submicron scanner was a type of engineering tool. In 2370, Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres used one while trying to construct a prototype Automated Personnel Unit.

Subnucleonic Device. A subnucleonic device is a device of unknown design that can be used to damage ore processors. In 2365, a subnucleonic device was used to damage an ore processor on Level 21 of Terok Nor, taking it out of operation for two weeks. Kira Nerys of the Bajoran Underground claimed responsibility to causing the sabotage, but admitted to Odo in 2370 that her colleague actually damaged the processor, as her responsibility was to find Vaatrik's list of Bajoran conspirators – an action that ultimately resulted in Kira murdering Vaatrik.

Subspace Phase Inverter. A subspace phase inverter was an instrument used by the Federation in the mid-24th century. The inverter could be used for realigning the flow of subspace phase. This device, when in operation, emitted eichner radiation. Starships rarely carried this device. In 2365, when attempting to trace the source of eichner radiation which was causing growth in a sample of plasma plague, the subspace phase inverter was the first source suggested. As there were none aboard the USS Enterprise-D, the inverter was dismissed as a possible candidate and cyanoacrylates were considered.

Synchronic Meter. A synchronic meter is a diagnostic tool used during the 23rd century to troubleshoot problems with transporter operations.

Thermal Regulator. A thermal regulator can refer to an engineering tool, or a component of a starship's or planet's environmental control system. The climate on planet Caldos was controlled by several thermal regulators. When it started to rain unexpectedly in the middle of summer, the maintainence crew checked the thermal regulators and climatic flow array for a malfunction. During the USS Voyager's maintenance overhaul in 2377, Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres reported that the thermal regulators were "still running a little hot." Later that year, Captain Kathryn Janeway used a thermal regulator in an attempt to repair the replicator in her quarters.

Thoron Generator. A thoron generator was a Starfleet medical tool that the Maquis found effective for blocking Federation tricorder scans. Lon Suder attempted to use a thoron generator to fool the Kazon that had commandeered the USS Voyager in 2372. Seska, an ex-Maquis, saw through the ruse.

Trident Scanner. trident scanner was a 23rd century piece of Federation technology that was used energy ray generation and neutralization for repairing power relays. Spock used a trident scanner while he attempted to repair the Galileo, after the shuttlecraft had been brought down on the Companion's homeworld. The scanner, however, was short-circuited and destroyed by the Companion when Spock attempted to make physical contact with it. In 2267, Ensign Harper used a trident scanner to connect the M-5 computer to the USS Enterprise's main power plant. He later attempted to disconnect M-5 with a trident scanner, but was vaporized by the advanced computer for his troubles. The same year, Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott, leading a repair party aboard the USS Constellation, employed a trident scanner to cross-connect the warp drive control circuits to those of the impulse engines. Another model of the trident scanner was still used aboard the USS Enterprise-A in 2287. The scanner appeared in the first bridge scene, held by a crewmember. It is identical in form to the Sonic Disruptor.

Tripartite Microsealing Mechanism. A tripartite microsealing mechanism is a particularly complicated type of lock. Rom concocted one of his "special security locks" using this type of mechanism in 2372 to guard the bar while he and Quark visited Ferenginar. Unfortunately, Chief O'Brien and Doctor Bashir's dart board was locked inside, and they attempted to dismantle the lock rather than replicate a new board – though they both denied their old one was lucky. Of the lock, Odo observed, "I've never seen anything so convoluted."

Upgrade Tool. This engineering tool was used by Chief Miles O'Brien in 2372 on Deep Space 9. He worked on a console on OPS and told Major Kira Nerys about the upgrades he did to the station's systems.

Veridium Injector. A veridium injector is a type of engineering tool used by the Terrellians. In 2377, Irina asked Harry Kim to pass her the veridium injector while repairing her ship, but he didn't know what it looked like.

Wrench. A wrench was a tool used to increase torque and turn bolts, nuts or other hard-to-turn items. Wrenches were used by the inhabitants of Miri's homeworld. In 2267, Jahn's friend used a wrench to bludgeon Captain Kirk. Engineers aboard the USS Enterprise used wrenches in the late 23rd century. Ben Finney used a wrench found in the Enterprise engineering room as a weapon against Kirk. In 2373, Crewman Amaro joked with Pechetti and Boq'ta – both engineers aboard Deep Space 9 – that he and Stolzoff would guard them while they "play with their wrenches."

Heavy Equipment

Anti-Grav Unit. An anti-grav is any device capable of nullifying the force of gravity, usually to lift loads of an extremely high mass. Anti-grav devices were in use primarily during the 23rd century. At various times these devices were used to transport Nomad, to handle an anti-matter bomb, and later to carry the Medusan Ambassador Kollos around the USS Enterprise. The unit Captain Kirk and Ensign Garrovick used to transport the anti-matter bomb was marked ANTI-GRAV 57,000 Gkg. By the 24th century, these devices were upgraded into the larger anti-grav sled. Wheelchairs using anti-grav units are also available.

Anti-Grav Sled. An anti-grav sled, sometimes referred to simply as an anti-grav is a device used to carry objects which are too heavy to lift manually. The technology used is similar to a hovercraft or anti-grav lift. The flow capacitor is one component of an anti-grav sled; however, Reginald Barclay accidentally referred to it as a "flux capacitor" while recounting an embarrassing incident to Deanna Troi. She either did not notice the mistake, or did not want to correct the lieutenant, who had already been corrected by the 17-year-old Wesley Crusher earlier. Kasidy Yates and her crew sometimes used anti-grav sleds to transport cargo into her cargo ship. Although Sisko suggested using the transporter instead, hers was a Mk. V, which was ill-equipped to transport unstable bio-matter.

Antigraviton Emitter. The antigraviton emitter was a device that emitted antigraviton particles. This device was devleoped by Damar as part of an effort to disrupt the self-replicating minefield blocking off the Bajoran wormhole. The emitter produced a field of antigraviton particles to fool proximity detonators on the self-replicating mines. With the detonators disabled, the entire minefield could be detonated simultaneously, thus preventing automatic replication of individual mines.

Electronic scrambler. In 2267, Spock constructed an electronic scrambler to disable an alien entity called the Companion. The Companion was chiefly composed of ionized gases and electricity; Spock's creation was designed to scramble its electronic impulses. The device was very simple; a red on-off switch near the right side of the front panel was the only important control. The scrambler evidently caused the Companion some degree of pain or discomfort, as it reacted immediately, seeking and destroying the device and very nearly killing Kirk and Spock. Only Zefram Cochrane's intervention prevented it from killing the two officers. The device was either not powerful enough, or not sophisticated enough, to cause the creature any permanent harm.

Magneton Scanner A magneton scanner is an engineering tool with multiple purposes; it is used to degauss the transporter systems, and is one of the most thorough scanning devices aboard Starfleet ships of the late 24th century. A magneton scanner can degauss an entire transporter room in about five minutes. In 2371, the USS Voyager used a magneton scan to detect subspace fractures on a class M planet in the Delta Quadrant. Later in 2371, the Voyager crew tried to scan for a non-corporeal alien life form moving from one crewman to another using a magneton scanner, as Paris suggested it was the most thorough scanning device aboard, but it was unsuccessful. Later that year, B'Elanna Torres suggested to Chell that a magneton scanner would degauss the transporter room a lot faster than the micro-resonator he was using, but Tuvok told him it would teach him "patience". In 2373, when Captain Janeway was near death, she hallucinated that Torres used a Magneton scanner to search for her remaining presence aboard the ship, if there was any way to help her. But this later turned to be an alien-induced near-death-experience.

Plasma Canister. A plasma canister is a specialized containment module that carries warp plasma. In 2152, Enterprise NX-01 chose warp plasma as a compensation for repairs. Commander Tucker rolled the plasma canisters to the payment station, and then detonated it.

Cutting/Drilling Equipment

Cutter Beam. A cutter beam is a hand-held tool that emits a beam of directed energy which is used to perform a cutting function. A cutter beam was generated by a phaser-like tool used by Starfleet engineers in the 2260s. An engineer used such beam to free Scotty from the jammed Engineering core hatch in 2269.

Laser Drill. A laser drill is an excavation tool used in terraforming and mining. Large versions incorporate an operating console and a laser, usually positioned behind. During a terraforming operation on Velara III in 2364, the laser drill killed the hydraulics engineer, Arthur Malencon, and almost destroyed Lieutenant Commander Data when he was investigating Arthur's murder. It was found that the drill was being controlled by the microbrains. Neelix brought a portable laser drill with him on a mission to mine gallicite on the Sakari planet in 2373.

Phaser bore. Phaser bore is a 23rd century Starfleet tool, which utilizes a type of cutter beam, to bore through up to 20 meters of rock per minute. Captain Kirk requested a phaser bore in his rescue attempt of Lieutenant Uhura from the Shore Leave Planet in 2269. The planet, however, erected an electronic shield preventing transport of the device to the surface. During the 24th century, a phaser drilling tool was used to drill a tunnel through several meters of rock in seconds.

Phaser Drill. A phaser drill is a device employing phaser technology to drill holes into rock formations or a planet's mantle. The ship's phasers of the USS Enterprise-D were used as a phaser drill to bore holes into the mantle of Penthara IV to release carbon dioxide located in subterranean pockets. The tectonic stability of the planet was overestimated, however, and the drilling caused massive earthquakes and volcanic outbreaks. Commander Chakotay employed the use of phaser drills to free the Delta Flyer from a rock face.
