2.20 Cosmology is a branch of astronomy which studies the structure, origins, and space-time relationships of the universe. It is also a branch of metaphysics that deals with the nature and origin of the universe. A cosmologist is one who studies this particular branch of science. According to Kathryn Janeway, Federation cosmologists had a theory, following the discovery of the Omega particle in the 23rd century, that revealed that "the molecule once existed in nature for an infinitesimal period of time at the exact moment of the Big Bang. Some claimed Omega was the primal source of energy for the explosion that began our universe." Seven of Nine, however, dismissed it as "a creation myth like any other." Crewman Mortimer Harren studied this field. He held five advanced degrees in theoretical cosmology and needed one year of hands-on experience in order to qualify for the Institute of Cosmology on Orion I, so he joined the crew of the USS Voyager. He had worked on Schlezholt's Theory of Multiple Big Bangs and studies in dark matter proto-comets. Topics include Astrophysics and Wang's Second Postulate

4.20 Biochemistry is one of the science courses offered at Starfleet Academy. This course can lead to a medical position. Biochemistry can be taken for more than two semesters. After sodium pentathol was having no effect on Quark in 1947 Earth, Jeff Carlson noted that Ferengi biochemistry was nothing like that of Humans. Cardassian biochemistry was all but unknown to Federation doctors, including Julian Bashir, in 2370. Tom Paris took two semesters of biochemistry in the Academy. This qualified him to be a field medic on board the USS Voyager. The biochemistry course Paris enrolled in did not teach how to perform a respiratory series. Topics Include: Organic Chemistry
4.30 Molecular biology is the study of biology at a molecular level. The field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry. Molecular biology chiefly concerns itself with understanding the interactions between the various systems of a cell, including the interrelationship of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and learning how these interactions are regulated.
4.40 Genetics is the field of science concerned with the study of genes, the method common to many species by which traits and characteristics are passed from one generation to the next in reproduction. The term is also used to refer to anything pertaining to genes. Each individual has a unique genetic structure. Likewise, every alien race has a different genetic pattern. Khan Noonien Singh and the other augments of the Eugenics Wars were products of "controlled genetics", or eugenics. Their genetic makeup was chosen through selective breeding and their DNA altered through the process of genetic engineering. Doctor Arik Soong was a well-known geneticist. Topics include: Biogenic weapon, Bio-mimetic gel, Klingon augment virus
4.50 Botany is the study of plant life. It is a biological science. Topics include botanical DNA.
4.60 Zoology is a branch of biology which involves the study of animals and non-sentient lifeforms. Which includes Entomology, the study of insects (usually expanded to include the study of arachnids). Topics include: Biology, Norcadian Museum of Entomology. Also includes Ornithology is the scientific study of birds.

5.00 Geologists (including seismologists, planetary scientists and volcanologists)
5.10 Geology is the science involving the study of the natural landforms of a planet or other celestial body with a solid surface. Geology is a major area of study aboard Federation starships. On a planetary scale, geology can be used to predict how a planet will develop over time. In the Julian Bashir, Secret Agent holoprogram, Julian Bashir declared "Baccarat and geology are my life". Topics Include: Geological terminology, Beach, Continent, Desert, Lava, Magma, Mountain, Subcontinent Volcano
5.20 Seismology is the study and measure of earthquakes. In Julian Bashir, Secret Agent, one of the villains, Hippocrates Noah, had gathered the world's leading seismologists and constructed a series of lasers designed to cause a chain reaction that would flood Earth via a series of extremely violent earthquakes. Topics inlcude: seismic regulator, helio-seismology, tectonic plate, volcanology, geology, planetary science
5.30 Planetary Science is the study of non-stellar celestial bodies, such as planets, planetoids, asteroids and moons. It is classified as a Natural Science. Topics include: Crater, Geography, Geology, Planetary classification, Terraforming, Tidal locking, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Stellar Cartography, Planetary survey, Survey team

6.00 Logicians (including statisticians and mathematicians) Often Works with Engineering.
6.10 Mathematics is a field of study using signs and numbers. The Traveler told Wesley Crusher that in order to free his mother, Beverly Crusher, from a static warp bubble, they had to leave the equations behind and go beyond mathematics. Topics include: Calculus, Geometry.
6.20 Logic is a field of study of Logic, inductive and deductive.

7.00 Computer scientists (including cyberneticists and roboticists). Often works with Engineering.
7.10 Computer science is the field of science relating to the theory, algorithms, design, and architecture of information processing systems. These concepts are the foundation of all Starfleet computer and sensory systems. It encompasses the fields of cybernetics and robotics. In 2364, as Lieutenant Commander Data began his exposition on how he had discovered checksum discrepancies between the main computer logs of the USS Stargazer and the personal logs of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William Riker cut him off by saying, "I don't want a computer science lession, Data."
7.20 Cybernetics is the study of hugely complex artificial intelligence systems, usually running on a positronic matrix and often housed inside robotic machine technology. A practical implementation of this is an android. Commander Bruce Maddox worked at the Cybernetics Division of the Daystrom Institute in 2367. (TNG: "Data's Day") The Vidiians appear to be partially cybernetic in some cases, such as Denara Pel. Topics include: Daystrom Institute, Positronic brain, Robotics, Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, Starfleet Cybernetics Journal
7.30 Robotics is the study of robots. This subject was available for study by cadets at Starfleet Academy at least until the late 2360s. B'Elanna Torres learned about robotics while attending the Academy. She would later find that these teachings paled in comparison to the experience she gained when repairing the systems of 3947.

8.00 Social scientists (including anthropologists, economists, historians, political scientists, philosphers and sociologists)
8.10 Sociology is the scientific study of groups and societies. Sociologists explore how people interact to form communities, and attempt to extrapolate how communities will behave in the future, based on observations of their behavior in the past and present. Topics inlcude: Sociology, Exo-sociology, Anthropology, Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development, Politics, Psychology, Exo-psychology, Psychiatry, Space psychology Medicine
8.20 Anthropology and Archaeology is the study of Humanoids, and can be broken down into Physical anthropology and Cultural anthropology, which themselves have further subgroups. After First Contact it seems to have been expanded to include other humanoid species. The archaeology and anthropology officer was a position on Starfleet starships in the 23rd century. Anthropological topics include: Anatomy, Archaeology, Cultures, Language, Philosophy, Politics, Religion, Sociology, Astral Anthropology, Cultural contamination, Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development, Monitoring device, Richter scale of culture
8.30 Historians are scholars who research and interpret past events. This field of study is known as history. Federation starships of the 23rd century included historians among their officers. Lieutenant Marla McGivers, for instance, served on the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). It is not clear just what the duties of a historian were on a starship. Indeed, when the Enterprise encountered the 20th century sleeper ship SS Botany Bay, Captain Kirk commented that this was a chance to "finally get some use out of that historian."
8.40 Philosophy refers to a culture's set of beliefs and paradigms, it is also a matter of understanding thought itself, such as logic.
