Use of Technology for Literacy Learning: 05

The Teacher's Role in Choosing and Using Technology

Integrating Technology into the Classroom

  • Any application of technology—whether it is a television program, a videotape, or a computer program—should fit into the teacher's curricular structure, or it should not be used.

  • The application should present, reinforce, or teach a concept; offer tools for recording, collecting, and retrieving data; motivate students in their study; or provide assessment opportunities.

  • The content should be appropriate to the subject area, grade level, and maturity level of the students.

  • The presentation format should fit into the organizational structure, and the use should be adaptable to the time available.

  • Teachers must decide which applications fit these criteria and which do not...knowledge of the students and the curriculum can help teachers with this decision making.

  • Students should use technological tools to complete authentic tasks that involve both basic and advanced skills.

  • Students can work collaboratively, with the teacher monitoring and assisting in the activities.

  • The work may take place over a period of time, as is true in unit studies.
