The Bloomfield Third Riverbank held its first meeting in September 2000 in Nick Joanow's driveway where neighbors and the curious discussed rumoured proposals for new developments to be built across the Third River on the site of the former Scientific Glass factory (9 acres) and the former tile company site (5 acres). Both lots are on a flood plain of the river.
Only a year before this meeting, homeowners lining the river had been ravaged by Hurricane Floyd and knew first hand the damage torrential rains can wreak. Not only would the loss of the flood plain exacerbate an existing problem, but would put anyone living on the flood plain in the same terrible dilemna the existing homeowners face.
Our Goals:
- to promote and encourage the development of a Greenway throughout
Bloomfield...an emerald necklace to wend through Bloomfield from
Brookdale to Watsessing.
- To preserve the remaining open space in Bloomfield.
Bloomfield is already 95% developed and the remaining open space not
already designated parkland is at risk for further development. Of
immediate concern are 2 lots of approximately 20 acres located on a
flood plain and wetlands of the Third River. This is the old Scientific
Glass and Petriello Tile factory site located off of Broad at Lionsgate
(between Bay and Watchung).
- To find protection for the homes facing severe erosion and flooding
lining the Third river.
- To monitor the remediation at the Scientific Glass site to
ensure it is being done thoroughly and correctly.
How will we do it?
Form the BTRA to address concerns by:
- Sharing Information
- Determining a course of action
Stop the proposed townhouse development at
Liongate
- Reduce the prospect of increased flooding and erosion along the
Third River and its tributary
-
Stop the prospect of increased school overcrowding
- Stop the prospect of increased congestion and pollution in Bloomfield due to these developments
