Atomic Model Grading Rubric and Project Criteria

Objective
Students will construct a model of the atomic structure of an element of their choice, from atomic numbers 3 through 18 (Lithium through Argon).

Presentation
1.  On a base (cardboard, Styrofoam, etc.) no larger than about 2X2 feet.
2.  A hanging model, using durable string or yarn.
3.  A flat board.

Requirements  Students must convey: (100 points total)

  • the correct number of protons and neutrons. (20 point)
  • the correct number of electrons in their correct level/orbit.(20 point)
  • a size relationship (but not to scale).(20 point)
  • different colors for different particles with a color code.(20 point)
  • a label which lists the element’s atomic number, atomic mass, and chemical symbol.(20 point)

  • Students may use any school appropriate item they want to convey their model except for candy or perishable food.
