Simple Machine Webquest: Machine Design Project
Objectives and VA SOLs

Objective:
The student will design one or more devices using 4 simple machines. (Note: you do not need to actually build this!)

Directions:

  • Create an original design combining 4 simple machines.  The machine must have some practical application.
  • If you cannot combine 4 simple machines in one device, you will need to design more than one product.  (Each design must have at least 2 simple machines that work together-thus defining compound machine.)
  • Describe what your device can be used for and how to use it (approximately a paragraph).
  • Neatly draw the device and label the simple machines using arrows.

For the final product(s), you will turn in four pages (8.5x11) for each design.

Page 1 (Title Page) should include

·       a paragraph describing the use of the device

·       the names of all group members listing each individual’s specific contribution to the project

Page 2 should include a top view of the design with labels indicating each simple machine and their parts.

Page 3 should include a front view of the design with labels indicating each simple machine and their parts.

Page 4 should include a side view of the design with labels indicating each simple machine and their parts.

Each page should include the name for the device and your company name.  In addition, all illustrations should be neatly drawn and colored.

Grading Criteria (100 points total):
40 points - If four simple machines and their parts are labeled on each diagram

30 points - If a top, side, and front view is drawn

15 points - If a straight edge is used in drawing(s)

10 points - If a title page with the machine’s description is included

5 points - If each person participated equally
