This website is dedicated to an historic meeting between one of rock music's most celebrated guitarists and personalities, Jimmy Page, and of of the beat generations shining lights, William Burroughs. You might, at first glance think this was an odd pairing, but Burroughs was a regular contributer to the great rival to Rolling Stone at the time, Crawdaddy, and his "Beat" generation was the inspiration for much of the sixties generations views....Of course he was more famous for his literary accomplishments, but both were a part of (at that time) the subculture that was coming to the fore of popular thought, and here were two very different but very talented, some would say the most talented examples of thier mediums and genres. both are highly celebrated (albeit in different ways) by the culture to this day, and the interview here shows how two divergent ARTISTS pair together through unconventional means to forge something new and creative, this type of thing had never been seen before as W.burroughs describes himself, (and you will read) it wasnt an interview in the normal sense , W.B. was riffing off this guitar god, like a jazz musician bouncing things off him like a drummer and a guitarist exchanging riffs, with sometimes very strange, and other times prophetic results...this interview if you can even call it that seemed to have lasting effects on Jimmy, (probably without his knowing it, as he at times doesnt seem too open to exploring in this admittedly unconventional manner, and he was after all a sort of macho rock god, but at the same time into the occult and magic, but a consumate perfectionist and rare creative talent, as Neil Young described him in his mirrorball cd, like "a riverwashed diamond" a diamond in the rough) and W.B. making suggestions seemingly oblivious to his staus as rock god, but rather as an architypal musician and performer, envisioning a stairway to heaven through his experiences with the occult and "middle eastern trance music" at any rate enjoy, as i did, the discovery of new insights into one of the most interesting, and at least to my mind , and probably yours as well, favorite groups of all time, Led Zeppelin. |
