Where do we go from here?

·       By the summer of 1991, Thom had joined Colin, Ed and Phil in the semi-detached house they were sharing in Oxford. Since Thom had little money unlike the others who’d earned a job for money while waiting for Thom’s graduation, he slept on the floor.

·       Thom and Jonny were writing a lot of songs, and soon they set their minds to recording demos.

“Having 3 guitarists means there’s a lot of competition—who’s going to come up with the best line first. Jonny always wins.”

·       Thom wrote 2 tunes that dealt with the life in Oxford—“Everything Lies through Their Teeth” and “Jerusalem”.

·       When they signed to EMI, their record company told them to “get styled” by giving them three hundred pounds in 3 hours.

“I threw mine all away immediately. I bought bags and bags and bags of second hand clothes and took them home and looked at them all”

And then, he chose never to wear any of them.

·       Drill EP was released on 5 May 1992 and the reviews and critics were not favourable at all.

“After the EP came out and the slagging started, it made me so paranoid I wasn’t able to write. Everything I did seemed contrived because, true or not, I was anxious to avoid criticisms.
