Pictures from Chris and Kapala’s trip to West Africa, November 2001

In November 2001, Chris and Kapala Hoge came and visited us in Côte d’Ivoire.

Chez Abdul
While in Abidjan, we mostly just hung out a lot, such as here in our favorite Lebanese restaurant…

chez nous
…and here with friends at home. Our friends made a good impression by consuming lots of beer and wine (except Bruce) and telling ghost stories. Here I believe Jorgen was telling the story about the holy snake that lived behind his house in India.

Chez Jesus
We also made a quick trip up to Yamoussoukro, where the late President Félix Houphouet-Boigny built this modest chapel.

Then we took a trip around Ghana, Togo and Benin. This picture was taken in the mountains near Kpalime, in south-western Togo.

Chez Al
This restaurant really exists in Lome, Togo, where protection of intellectual property rights (such as registered trademarks) is not what it might be. We didn’t eat there, but it wasn’t for political reasons.

An old colonial French building in Ouidah, Benin. Apparently the Beninois don’t place too high a priority on keeping such things maintained.

The big tourist attraction in Ouidah is the “voodoo market,” where you can enjoy one-stop shopping for all your juju needs. Available for sale at this stall were monkey heads, dog skulls, assorted dead snakes, birds and rodents, and other objects not easily identified.
