Our road trip to Honduras

In March and April 2003 we drove from Maryland to Honduras, following more or less this route:

Here we are with my family the day we started off - before weeks of deprivation and frostbite changed our appearance horribly.

We started off visiting Mark and Dar Brooks Hedstrom in Springfield, Ohio.

Then we were visiting our friends Deb and Mbojua in Detroit, and realized that we were just across the river from Canada. So we went and had breakfast in Canada. In the first place we went into, when we said we wanted breakfast, the waitress said "Oh I'm sorry, it's Monday." (Canadians don't eat breakfast on Mondays?) But with a little effort we eventually found a fine breakfast at this Lebanese-Canadian place. The existence of this restaurant shows that, if Carl Chastenay and Nisreen Salti can ever sort out their issues, there's a proven business plan awaiting their merged talents.

This house, while not typical of the native dwellings we observed, did actually exist, coincidentally right across the street from the Lebanese-Canadian diner.

Moving west, we visited Angola...

...and then the Lopez family, Gene, Sonia, and Don, south of Denver.

We spent a wonderful weekend with Tina Rodriguez and Cindy Newman in Bozeman Montana. Here's a self portrait near Chico Hot Springs.

Tina and Cindy also took us down to Yellowstone National Park, or at least the bit of it that's open during the winter. Here's Justina at Mammoth Hot Springs.

In Boise Idaho we visited the Cronin family, which has recently doubled in size. l to r: Kyra, Brian, Veronica, Tom (Hastings), and Alana.

In Oregon we decided to visit Crater Lake. We had checked and knew that the main road into the park was open. We did not know that the average amount of snow on the ground on April 1st at Crater Lake is 120 inches. That was about the amount you see here.

The good news is that the lodge was open for lunch. The silly news is that the snow obscured any view of the lake, so we drove all that way and didn't actually get to see it.

Then we came south along the California coast, stopping to check out the redwoods.

How many times has this exact picture been taken?

Visiting Eric and Sophia Giegerich in San Anselmo, CA.
