Title:  Basket Case
Author:  Carl Hiaasen
Currently being read by Kristin

This mono thing is giving me time to read.  Pretty cool, in a sick sort of way.

Rest assured that I will love this book.  At my perfect dinner party, along with Kevin Spacey, Madeleine Albright, Denis Leary, and Gillian Anderson will be Carl Hiaasen.  Oh yeah.

Title:  The Industry of Souls
Author:  Martin Booth
Read by Kristin:  May 2002

This is a book my book club will be reading this summer.  I decided to get a jump start on it, thinking that the subject matter (life in a Russian work camp prison) may be too heavy for only four weeks reading.  However, Booth presents the story with fact and honesty, and does not fall prey to overworking gory details.  Despite the hardships, both physical and mental, the many different characters face in the novel, Booth shows us that the soul can still survive.

This is a very uplifting book - I definitely recommend!

Title:  Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging
Author:  Louise Rennison
Read by Kristin:  April 2002

I adored this book!  This title was recommended to me by Elizabeth, who has great taste in reading!  This is a young adult novel, yet one that women of any age can relate to and truly get a laugh out of!  Being a cat fanatic, I was especially amused by the antics of Angus, the half-wild cat that torments the neighborhood!

Title:  The Parrot's Theorem
Author:  Denis Guedj
I never finished reading this.  The plot was originally quite enticing, but then there were a number of math theorems and equations, which I assume would eventually lead back to the plot.  However, for a non-math person like myself, this was rather distracting.

Title:  Stick Figure - A Diary of my Former Self
Author:  Lori Gottlieb
Read by Kristin:  April 2002

I picked this book up hoping that it would be similar to The Best Little Girl in the World, which did a great job with the subject of anorexia nervosa.  Stick Figure, however, is less intense and dramatic.  The reader sees an eleven year old's development of the eating disorder, and brushes upon the triggers which started the irrational behaviors.  This book was recommended in Ladies' Home Journal; perhaps I was expecting more.  Nonetheless, Stick Figure provides insight into the world of adolescents which many adults forget.

Title:  Seizing Amber
Author:  Jonathan Harris
Read by Kristin:  April 2002

This is one of my "just pulled it off the shelves in a rush" special finds.  Art history meets espionage meets intelligence agents meets love and self-learning.  Wow!  Although Seizing Amber isn't deep reading, the book would definitely be great for light, summer intrigue.  This is the first published work from the author; very, very promising!

Title:  The Buffalo Soldier
Author:  Chris Bohjalian
Read by Kristin:  March 2002

I am a fanatic of Chris Bohjalian, so it should be no surprise that I jumped the minute this book was released.  The plot deals with marital troubles, death of a child, infidelity, foster children, and Vermont - all rolled into one.  There is a tense mood throughout the book, which Bohjalian handled extremely well.  The reader is not sure of the outcome until the very end - as it should be!

Title:  Living With Saints
Author:  Mary O'Connell
Read by Kristin:  March 2002

The title intrigued me, I must admit.  I am not a big fan of short stories, but this book had me hooked!  Each short story deals with a young woman confronting a life crisis, and a particular saint which helps her understand the duress which she is under.  The portrayal of saints is definitely not typical, with such intervention coming at a time of tattoos, abortions, suicide, and unplanned pregnancies.  The truly devout may be offended by some of the content of this book.  I found it extremely interesting to see how these female saints related to modern day society.  This is definitely interesting reading!
