400 single-family, 3 and 4 bedroom townhouses were constructed under the HUD 235 Program on three sites in a decaying area of Coney island. Program and budget restraints allowed a small margin for architectural expression, the design emphasis being on the street side. Materials and colors were selected for their residential associations and scale. Peaked and stepped facades recall the residential idiom of the area, resulting in lively and ebullient skylines

Awards: Coney Island Townhouses received a Certificate of Merit from the New York Municipal Arts Society and were chosen as part of the A.I.A. 's recent Exhibit on Affordable Housing in New York, which traveled to the Soviet union as part of an exhibition sponsored by the U.S.I.D.
