Of all the gods,Thor is by far the best known and most
widely worshipped. The giant red-bearded Thor with
his hammer is probably the picture most people get
of what a viking looked like.Thor fought against the
giants, who were the enemies of the gods and men
and who tried to destroy both Asgard and Midgard.
(Midgard is the Norse term for our Earth.)
The Earth is Thors home, though he has a great house
where his loyal followers dwelt after death. It is
called Bilskinir (Bill' Skin-near) ,and Thor provided
rest and the chance to feast or join him in his great
adventures.
Though jovial and fun-loving,Thor was also quick to
get angry at a foe or answer a challenge to fight. He
weilded a great hammer called Mjollnir (Mall'-near)
which a Dwarf made for him in payment for a lost bet.
It causes thunder and lightning and always returns
to Thors hand when thrown. He uses it to crush the
heads of giants who challenge him or threaten either
Asgard or the home of men.
Thor controlled the weather and was in charge of the
growing of crops. He was the god of the common,
simple farmer that made up most of the viking world.
His worship persisted well into the Christian age in
the late middle ages especially in Iceland and parts
of Norway. There are many stories about Thor in the
sagas and prose eddas. The symbol of his hammer
is still worn by many followers and can be found on
many pagan jewellry sites if you would like one.
Thor gives his name to our Thursday.
