The Prototype

In 1962 the C&O Railroad assumed control of the B&O Railroad and eventually added the Western Maryland Railway. In 1972 they became the Chessie System.

In 1967 The Seaboard Coastline RR. inherited 33.69% of L&N stock from a merger between the Seaboard Airline RR and the Atlantic Coast line RR . In 1975 The Seaboard Coastline merged with the L&N, Clinchfield, and the West Point Rout railroads. This merger formed the Family Lines System.

In 1983 The railroad became the Seaboard System. Later in the same year, The Chessie and Seaboard was combined under a holding Company called CSX. The letters CSX being derived from Chessie Seaboard and X, Meaning the multiplication symbol for much more.

In 1986 Everything merged into CSX Transportation.

The Kingsport Subdivision (KP Sub) is part of the Appalachian Division. The division is the form Clinchfield Railroad. It runs between Elkhorn City Kentucky to Spartenburg South Carolina. The route being approx. 277 miles. The KP Sub is the northern subdivision between Elkhorn city and Erwin Tennessee. The southern subdivision is the Blueridge Sub.

The 277 miles of the division follows several river courses through steeply sloped mountains covered with heavy foliage and nearly vertical rock cuts. There are 55 tunnels on the route, and in some places a train can be in more than 1 at the same time.

Much of the line is on curves. In the Blueridge mountains, the track loops and turns so much that at one point, 2 spots that are 4 miles apart by rail are physically only a few yards apart.

The Model

These physical features are what most modelers seem to want for a model railroad. The model You see on these pages is not an exact copy of the line. Some of the towns are in a different order than real life. The towns probably don't look like the real ones either. It's just not practical to build 'exactly like the real thing'.

This model is loosely based on the KP Sub in the 1986-1996 time frame. You could see many different locomotive paint schemes at the time.

Hopefully you will think you are looking at pictures taken in the mountains of Appalachia when you look at my model pictures. Or you will think of a place you know there. Let your imagination take over and enjoy these pages of my version of the KP Sub.

The Model began construction in 2001 and will never be truly finished. The reason being, no model railroad is every truly finished. As in real life there will always be changes to be made.
