Mushroom and Bacon Sandwich

The purchase of cheese naturally leads to a discussion on the lumpen proletariat.  Karl Marx (1818-1883 and former resident of the London Borough of Camden) alternated sessions of political theory with extravagant parties.  In the gaps between nice little earners such as "The Class Struggles in France" and "Critique of the Gotha Program", the Marx family gained first hand experience of the diet of the proletariat.  The classic works of Marx, do not include any recipe books, however, Mrs. Marx was probably good at the cheap and cheerful sandwich such as this one.  I did not ask the woman who provided this recipe if she was a Marxist.

Most butchers and bacon sellers offer 2lb bags of bacon bits for around £1.  A couple of minutes trimming and sorting provides the basis for a sandwich or pasta recipe.

Time:  15 - 20 Minutes

Ingredients (Serves 2)

8 oz (250gm) of bacon bits
8 oz (250gm) of mushrooms
Oil/Fat for frying
4 slices of bread.

Equipment

Frying pan.

Method

Gently fry the trimmed and sorted bacon bits in a couple of tablespoons of oil.  Typically, they will boil first, then once the exuded water has evaporated, start to fry.  Slice the mushrooms and add them to the frying pan and carry on cooking for a few minutes - don't rush the process.  Spread the contents of the pan over two slices of bread and complete the sandwich with the remaining bread.

Comment

Provide tomato ketchup and brown sauce and access to a washing machine.  No marks for the wrong Marx on the graphic, but out graphics provider is not strong on political theory.
