I met Mary in my statistics discussion my first semester at Umass. I walked in the room on a rainy day and spotted a girl across the way who "noticed" me walk in. I saw the seat next to her open and made a new friend. I walked her to the library because she didn't have an umbrella. The two of us played a lot of tennis, drank a lot of booze and had lots of fun together.
Of all the ways to meet someone new, this is probably my favorite. Just walking around the planet and doing your thing. Then you stumble into someone elses path randomly and you stike up a conversation. Little do you know, you will become good friends. It always seemed more real that way.
