january highlights: coach Sean, flip turns finally, Gwen dreams...

Friday, January 17. Flippin good times and Gwen dreams.
I've been pretty consistent with my swims this week and have actually made some progress on my flip turns. Wow! They are neither beautiful nor advantageous at this point, but you gotta start somewhere. Since I've been doing 10 laps for warm up these days I have started doing the first five laps with a summersault at each end to get used to the whole rotation thing. I still get disoriented, but not as bad. I then stretch and then do the next five laps with full flip turns. Most are fairly good, but I still screw it all up now and then. I've also started doing a full on/off (freestyle/breaststroke) pyramid rather than the ladder. The pyramid is thus 16 laps long and has been a great way to break up my workout. So, my current swim workout is: five laps warm up; stretch; five laps more for warm up; 1 lap breath stroke to loosen up a bit; a 200 sprint set of either four 50s, two 100s, one 150 and one 50 or a full 200; stretch; 1 lap breathstroke to loosen up again; the pyramid; 3 laps with fist gloves, no kick; 3 laps free hands, no kick; 3 laps with paddles. Just over 2000yds.

I'm slacking on the run though. Need to get in gear. I've done long runs consistently, up to 50 minutes a shot, but haven't gotten back into the timed runs or track workouts.

Finally, had a crazy dream last night. It involved Gwen Stefani wanting to become a pentathlete. She was new to the whole thing, but surprisingly good at everything. The shoot was her hardest event though as she always got nervous when she had to do it in front of a crowd. It was crazy because she was a performer and all, but it really was an issue.

Tuesday, January 14. Early swim, long run.
Finally got my butt out of bed for an early swim today. It actually felt pretty good, which surprised me. Hopefully I can make it a trend so that I have the rest of the day to do other stuff. Also got in a long run tonight. I'm up to 50 minutes right now but I'd like to work up to about 90 minutes which would be a half marathon. The run felt really good, smooth and didn't actually get fatigued until about 10 minutes into the return trip (for the long runs I usually run out towards Ballard on the Burke Gilman and back).

Sunday, January 9. Fencing coach clinic. I took my first steps into fencing coaching this weekend. Rain City Fencing is offering a beginner coach clinic for a weekend each month through March so I decided to take them up. With my time as a crew coach, my Total Immersion coaching, a little bit of life and business coaching that I've been doing and now my fencing coaching I guess you could call me an all-in-one coach. I'm actually going to go with that and see what happens. Got an email and am working on a website to match. Stay tuned. Now if only I could make some money at with all this. Better to get some good experience, some certifications and some successes under my belt before I charge the big bucks though.
