Eric "Eazy E" Wright was born September 7th, 1964 in Compton, California. He sold drugs to support him & his family, after years of drug dealing & hustling, Eric finally had a break. Before Ruthless Records, Eric (AKA Eazy E) & his friend Andre Young (AKA Dr. Dre), made the classic "Boyz N The Hood". The song was an instant hit, selling around 500,000 out of the trunk of his car, Eazy E put that money & his drug money together & made 'Ruthless Records", the first gangsta rap record label. The first group...N.W.A (Niggaz With Attitude). There first album "N.W.A. & The Posse" went ignored upon its 1987 release. In late 1988 N.W.A released "Straight Outta Compton" a hardcore gangsta rap album. The album went on to sell 3 million copies without any radio or TV play. The song "Fuck The Police" led to N.W.A. recieving a letter from the F.B.I. that stated they were not happy with the lyrics & that N.W.A. should not perform that song. Also that year, Eazy E released his first solo album "Eazy Duz It", which went on to sell over 2.5 million copies. In 1989, Ice Cube left N.W.A. due to financial disagreements. Ice Cube went on to release a diss record, on his 1991 album "death Certificate", towards the remaing group member called "No Vaseline", in which he called them "house ni**ers". By that time N.W.A. was finished. N.W.A. (without Ice Cube) went on to release two more albums, "100 Miles & Runnin" in 1990 & "EFIL4ZAGGIN" in 1991. The songs on those two album were mosty lyrics written by Eazy E. EFIL4ZAGGIN sold over 2 million, debuting at #2 on the billboard charts. In 1992, Dr. Dre left N.W.A. & Ruthless Records for Death Row records, leading to the end of N.W.A. & the beginning of a fued between two old friends. Dr. Dre released his first solo album "The Chronic", which included the diss "Fuck With Dre Day", sparking the battle between him & Eazy. Eazy retaliated with his third solo album "It's On (Dr. Dre) 187'um Killa", which featured the single "Real Muthaphuckin G's" a diss to Death Row & Dr. Dre. Before "It's On (Dr. Dre) 187'um Killa", there was his second solo, "5150 Home For The Sick" which sold over 1 million copies. In 1994, Eazy E signed the cleveland group Bone Thugs -N- Harmony, he rushed them to release there first album "Creepin' On Ah Come Up", the album went on to sell 3 million copies. Having Eazy signed them also showed that he still knew good rap music. Eazy was working with Bone Thugs on there follow up album "East 1999 Eternal", sadly he wouldn't get the chance to celebrate with Bone on the release of it or the major success of it. Eazy was rushed to the hospital in March, 1995. What was thought to be a case of chronic asthma, was truley a case of full blown AIDs. After a few weeks in the hospital...Eric "Eazy E" Wright died due to complications of AIDs. There still is no cure for the disease. Fans gathered the street, wearing "AIDS is RUTHLESS, so take it EAZY" shirts. As his gold casket was drove down the street, thousands of fans watched, crying. Many took of work & school to go to the funeral. After his death, Bone Thugs released the classic "The Crossroads", the song dedicated to Eazy & others they knew who passed, went on to sell over 2 million copies. The success of there album also helped keep the late Eazy E's memory alive. Not one video from that album didn't include a R.I.P sign, or picture of video of Eazy E, the man they call their mentor...& good friend. Eternal E & Straight Off Tha Streetz of Muthaphuckin Compton, both released after his death, proved to be a success. More recently Ruthless Records released a CD/DVD "The Impact of A Legend", which homors Eazy E's legacy in the rap game. The CD includes six unreleased songs, while the DVD has 10 music videos, interviews, performances & much more. Ruthless Records has been around since 1987...15 years due to the help of Tomika Wright, Eazy's widow, to whom he gave controll of Ruthless Records to when he married her in his hospital room. |
