The Thunder Bay Broomball Association held its 2nd Annual All-Star game on Saturday February 21st. The All-Star weekend marks the end of a lengthy regular season. As always, the selection of the teams was a very difficult as the league boasts many fine players worthy of representing the league.
There were a few key players missing from the game as Kevin Labelle, Jolene Tocheri, Kevin Stone and Denis Lavoie were all unable to play. The game started off slow, with a lot of passing and not many players forcing the ball to the net. The players did not disappoint as they quickly changed the pace of the game. The game stayed close until a couple of late goals by the Red side to pull out a 6-4 victory.
Dave Stewart opened the scoring for Red at 13:13 of the 1st, as he took a pass from Darryl Ilkew and buried the ball past Brad Proud. The Green squad made it a 1-1 game, when Kelly Maguire scored at the 5:37 mark.
The Red team took the lead again at 4:27 when Darryl Ilkew tipped a Billy Zewiec shot past Brad Proud. The Green side tied the score at 1:27 as Sean Miller took a feed from Blair Decorte and fired it by Frank Niccoli.
Team Green took their first lead of the game at 23:42 of the 2nd Half, when Gerry Lidemark scored his first of the game. The Red team made it a 3-3 game as Darryl Ilkew scored his second goal of the game at the 18:08 mark.
The Green side took a 4-3 lead at 14:41 when the Red side's Dave Stewart won a defensive faceoff and the ball rolled in past his goalie, Ray Gregory. Gerald Zurkan was credited with the goal. Dave Stewart quickly made up for the miscue when he scored at the 11:52 mark. His second goal of the game tied the score at 4.
The Red team took a 5-4 lead at 3:06 when Bob Ford took a pass from Darryl Ilkew and with his back to the net, slid the ball under Bob McFarlane. Red added another goal 7 seconds later as Wade Hovi took a pass from Darryl Ilkew and shot it by Bob McFarlane.
Each of the players put on a good show for those that came out to watch. There was a lot of fine passing mixed in with a few nice goals and a few fine defensive efforts. All of the goaltenders played strong and despite being bombarded with shots, they each managed to come up with a few amazing saves. Brad Proud even shut the door on Darryl Ilkew as he broke in alone early in the game.
Thanks to everyone involved in another successful event and a special thanks to Butch Carroll and Tom Dennison for refereeing the game.
