Vega Mini-Stock Car

This car was built in 1970 for the first HO scale ThunderRoad Speedway. I lived in Chicago at the time, and frequented a little 1/4 mile paved track, Raceway Park, in Blue Island. One of the classes that ran there was Mini-Stock, little four-cylinder sub-compacts that often turned laps as fast as the late models, due to their good handling and light weight. The body for this car is a static model, probably a Lindberg®, though I really don't remember.

The unusual feature on this car (aside for being a Vega) is the mounting system. The rub rails (painted red) on the side of the car are made of thin brass rod. Both the horizontal member and the vertical members bend up on the inside of the body to form and AFX style mounting cradle for the standard AFX chassis. As you might imagine, it took a lot of time and a lot of wasted brass to come up with the correct configuration and make it identical for both sides.
