Such maps help to show the origin of the surname. The theory is that even over long periods of time the largest group of people with a given surname will still occur near its origin. This works well for surnames which originated as place names such as THURLOW. As expected, the maps below show the largest concentration of THURLOWs in 1881 in Suffolk. Thurlow is a Suffolk place name.
