Let us keep in mind that Kentucky was so called in 1792 from its principal
river, which is the Indian name for "dark and bloody ground." First
settlers arrived near Lexington, 1775. Kentucky was formed from Virginia,
admitted to the Union June 1, 1792.
So little is known of the Kentucky Thweatts. As stated elsewhere, Kentucky
formed an important link in the absorption of emigrants from the post Revolution
period. Kentucky was a part of Virginia and veterans of the Revolution from
Virginia were rewarded by land grants in Kentucky to start settlement west of
the mountains.
A member of one family of ex-Kentuckians from around Paducah who wrote as
follows: "My father died when I was very young and I know nothing of
his people. His name was John Raymond Thweatt is a nephew of mine. I have
brothers and sisters also." Signed, John I. Thweatt.
