Summer Nats 2002 Gardermoen, Norway
June 1st to 2nd 2002
Last updated June 11th 2002
Finally a nice sunny summer weekend here in Norway. Our first round in the Nordic series (NDRS).
12 drivers showed up to compete in Super Gas.
After 7 rounds of qualifying on saturday we were 4th qualifyer with a 9,913.
Since it’s now clear that we are back to Sportsman ladders this year, this meant we would meet Håkan Mattsson of Sweden in the first round. He is always running strong and going many rounds, which you can also see by his start-number SG 5. But he managed only a 9,986 today.
First Qualifyer was ”Ålands-Pelle” Eriksson on a 9,904. His nickname comes from the fact that he lives on the island Åland between Sweden and Finland. So every time he goes racing he has to spend a few hours on a ferry!
Sunday saw two more rounds of qualifying. Petter Sukkestad improved to a 9,908 and bumped us down to 5th. But this only meant that Petter got the tough task to meet Håkan Mattsson in the first round and left us with a bye-run! We should have met Kjell Skrede, but he overdid his usual wheelstand act in his ex- SuperStock Firebird and were out with a broken oil-pan (or something).
Thank you Petter!

Eliminations started with the sun still shining. The weather-gods must have mistaken this for a monday …………
Our first round solo-run went without problems.
Our next opponent was Olav ”Asse” Øvstetun. Another competitor that insists on doing wheelstands like a Super Stocker. He came fresh from a win at Frøya but we were able to beat him!
But in the semi-final we had to face Håkan Mattsson after all. He runs a Pontiac ex- Pro Stocker like ours so this round became like a flash-back to an 85-86 Pro Stock race.
But it beacame no real race. Morten saw some stange blinks on the Christmas three and didn’t get a proper start. So Håkan ran to an easy win. Maybe it was the low sun who played us a trick.
In the all-Finnish quarter-final ”Ålands-Pelle” lost fire and gave the win to Vesa Raiski. Thereby giving Vesa a bye-run to the final. Vesa is Nordic SG 1 for the past three years, but crashed his ’34 Ford in the last race of last season. He is now back with a ’55 Nomad and will of course have a more difficult task keeping his SG 1 next year with a new car.
The final also became a little bit of an anti-climax because Håkan Mattsson had some staging-problems and got a red-light.
So a beautiful race weekend ended with Vesa Raiski’s first win in his new car. Congratulations Vesa!
