Dharamshala – Los tibetanos en el exilio marcaron hoy el 49º aniversario del fallido levantamiento nacional de 1959 en el Tíbet lanzando una histórica marcha de regreso a casa. La marcha al Tíbet se inició en Dharamshala, residencia en el exilio de Su Santidad el Dalai Lama y sede del gobierno tibetano en el exilio. Organizada por cinco importantes ONGs tibetanas con sede en la India y lanzada a menos de cinco meses de que China dé comienzo a los Juegos Olímpicos de verano, esta iniciativa tiene como objetivo luchar contra la ocupación china del Tíbet y reforzar el movimiento tibetano a favor de la libertad.
"Las exigencias de esta marcha reflejan las verdaderas aspiraciones de los tibetanos tanto dentro del Tíbet como en el exilio," dijo el Sr Tsewang Rigzin, presidente del Congreso de Jóvenes Tibetanos (o TYC en sus siglas en inglés). "Ya que el gobierno chino utiliza la plataforma de los Juegos Olímpicos en China para legitimar su ocupación ilegal del Tíbet, queremos demostrar que el Tíbet pertenece a los tibetanos, y no nos rendiremos hasta que el Tíbet sea independiente.”
En la marcha al Tíbet participan 100 marchistas clave, entre ellos monjes, monjas, ancianos y jóvenes nacidos en el exilio para los cuales la marcha proporciona la oportunidad de ver al Tíbet por primera vez con sus propios ojos. Miles de marchistas de apoyo, entre ellos tibetanos, indios y occidentales, acompañaron la marcha hacia la baja Dharamsala, en señal de solidaridad.

"Lanzada cuando China se prepara para ser el anfitrión de los Juegos Olímpicos de 2008, la marcha al Tíbet es un acontecimiento histórico que muestra el deseo del pueblo tibetano de regresar a su patria," dijo la Dra. B. Tsering, presidente de la Asociación de Mujeres Tibetanas. El Sr. Sergia Delia, invitado principal y diputado del parlamento italiano, dio el banderazo de salida de la marcha al Tíbet tras expresar su apoyo y entusiasmo a los marchistas clave. La Sra. Asha Reddy, partidaria del Tíbet desde hace muchos años, asistió a la ceremonia como invitada de honor.

Como parte de los preparativos para la marcha, tanto los marchistas clave como voluntarios y miembros del Comité de Organización asistieron a un entrenamiento de tres días sobre la resistencia no violenta y la disciplina, desde el 6 al 8 de marzo 2008 en el Monasterio de Dolmaling en Dharamshala. Los ponentes en los talleres incluían al Sr. Rajiv Vohra, seguidor de Gandhi y director de la Non-Violence Peace Force Asia, basada en Delhi, y Anand Sharma, director de la rama de Shimla de la Red de Leyes sobre Derechos Humanos (H.RL.N. en sus siglas en inglés). Dharamshala – Tibetans in exile marked the 49th anniversary of the 1959 national uprising in Tibet with the launch of a historic journey homeward today. The March to Tibet commenced from Dharamshala, the exile home of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and seat of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile. This initiative, organized by five leading Tibetan non-governmental organisations based in India and launched less than five months before China is set to host the summer Olympics, is aimed at both fighting the Chinese occupation of Tibet and reinvigorating the Tibetan freedom movement.

"The demands of this March reflect the true aspirations of Tibetans inside Tibet and in exile," said Mr. Tsewang Rigzin, President of the Tibetan Youth Congress. "With the Olympics in China, and the Chinese Government using this platform to legitimize its illegal occupation of Tibet, we are demonstrating that Tibet belongs to Tibetans and we will never give up until Tibet is independent."

The March to Tibet includes 100 Core Marchers, consisting of monks, nuns, the elderly, and youth who were born in exile and for whom this march provides the opportunity to see Tibet for the first time with their own eyes. Thousands of support marchers, including Tibetans, Indians and Westerners, accompanied the March to Lower Dharamshala, showing their solidarity.

"The March to Tibet, launched as China prepares to host the 2008 Olympic Games, is a landmark event showing the Tibetan people's desire to return to their homeland," said Dr. B. Tsering, President of the Tibetan Women's Association. "Through this action we are demonstrating our commitment to bring an end to the continued suffering of the six million Tibetans living under the brutal Chinese occupation."

The Chief Guest, Mr. Sergia Delia, Member of the Italian Parliament, flagged off the March to Tibet after expressing his support and encouragement to the Core Marchers. Mrs. Asha Reddy, a long time Tibet supporter, was the Guest of Honor of the ceremony.

In preparation for the March, the Core Marchers, volunteers and Organizing Committee members attended a three-day training on Non-Violent Resistance and Discipline from March 6 to 8, 2008, at Dolmaling Nunnery, Dharamshala. Speakers at the workshops included Mr. Rajiv Vohra, a Gandhian and Director of Non-Violence Peace Force Asia, Delhi, and Anand Sharma, Director of the Shimla branch of the Human Rights Law Network. The participants said that the workshops helped them further strengthen their commitment to the principles of non-violence and their conviction in the vision of the March to Tibet.

The Tibetan People's Uprising Movement is a global movement of Tibetans inside and outside of Tibet taking control of our political destiny. The March to Tibet, the heart of the Tibetan People's Uprising Movement, aims to revive the spirit of the historic national uprising of 1959, and by engaging in direct action, bring about an end to China's 60 years of illegal and brutal occupation of Tibet.

Estimado Sr. Presidente:

Como sabrá, el pueblo tibetano ha marcado con coraje el aniversario del fallido levantamiento de 1959 con protestas contra la continuada ocupación china de su país. Las protestas comenzaron en Lhasa y se extendieron por toda la Región Autónoma del Tíbet y la provincia tibetana de Amdo incorporada por China a las provincias chinas de Qinghai y Gansu. No sorprende a nadie que las autoridades chinas hayan utilizado gas lacrimógeno y la fuerza brutal para aplastar estas protestas pacíficas.

Presidente, el gobierno español debe ser consecuente. Usted lo ha sido en muchos temas y quiza por eso ha vuelto a ganar las elecciones. Pero no se puede elegir cuáles regímenes represivos critica mientras se calla sobre otros – según su peso económico.

En nombre de los miembros del Comité de Apoyo al Tíbet (CAT) y de todos los simpatizantes de la causa tibetana que contemplan horrorizados las escalada represiva en el Tíbet, me dirijo a usted para pedirle que haga una declaración pública lo más pronto posible condenando las autoridades chinas por su respuesta violenta al pueblo tibetano por expresar su deseo de autodeterminación.

Le ruego que ponga fin a su silencio y al de su gobierno sobre la situación de los Derchos Humanos en el Tíbet y en China, el cual avergüenza al pueblo español. Los negocios y las amistades no pueden mantenerse a cualquier precio. Su silencio solo envalentona al gobierno chino a creer que puede pisotear los derechos humanos fundamentales de los tibetanos y de otras minorías y mayorías de su propio pueblo con impunidad. Y su silencio envía el trágico mensaje a estos valientes manifestantes de que el gobierno español está dispuesto a hacer la vista gorda.

Es hora de liberar al Tíbet de este régimen represivo.

Short summary of developments (Saturday):

* China's official news agency Xinhua have stated that 10 people were killed ("burnt to death") in Tibet. Many media are reporting this figure, although some are adding unconfirmed reports of larger number (up to 100 from tibet.net) of dead.

* The BBC reported that tanks had been seen patrolling the streets of Lhasa and that a cordon is still in place around the historic centre of Lhasa. The BBC said the Chinese authorities had denied that martial law had been imposed. The Economist's James Miles, who is in Lhasa, said on Saturday that there was "still rioting, but not on the same scale as Friday" with some shops being looted.

* The BBC also said that China has claimed it will deal harshly with protesters despite calls for restraint by the international community. AFP quoted Jampa Phuntsog as denouncing the "plot of the separatists" and saying "We will challenge them firmly, according to law." BBC online quoted Xinhua as calling on "the lawbreakers to give themselve in by Monday midnight" and promised that "leniency would be given to those who surrender".

* Feedback from journalists in Beijing show that China is aggressively portraying Tibetans to foreign media as indiscriminately violent; responsible for all the violence in Lhasa. There is not a great deal of evidence so far that foreign media are following this line, but we must be vigilant and ready to respond if necessary.

* A new set of marchers in India have set off from Dehra, the place where the previous marchers were stopped and detained. Their pres release is pasted below. We are pleased to learn that two of the march organisers: SFT's Tenzin Choeying and Coordinator Lobsang Yeshi are now being held together with Tenzin Tsundue. Obviously we are not happy that they are being held at all, but it is good that Tsundue i no longer being held on his own.

Today we will be preparing a few talking points which we hope will be helpful to you in providing more context for these events, particularly if we feel that future press coverage does not accurately portray the Tibetan struggle, or fails to fully inform readers about the circumstances of these protests. MANIFESTANTES PROTESTAN EN TODO EL TIBET AL RESPONDER CHINA CON BRUTALIDAD
Tibetanos se enfrentan a tropas chinas en Lhasa; disturbios sin precedentes en todo el Tíbet

Dharamsala/Nueva York– Las autoridades chinas han respondido hoy con brutalidad a las continuadas protestas en Lhasa y en todo el Tíbet. Según fuentes en el Tíbet tanques chinos entraron en Lhasa esta mañana y miles de tropas armadas han sellado los tres monasterios más importantes donde se iniciaron las protestas el lunes. Tras la represión policial de una protesta protagonizada por monjes del monasterio de Ramoche en el centro de Lhasa, docenas de monjes y personas laicas se enfrentaron a la policía armada en las calles, volcando vehículos de la policía y prendiéndoles fuego. La policía disparó con fuego real sobre los manifestantes, y al menos dos personas han muerto y puede que hasta 33.

“A pesar de los enormes riesgos que corren al hacerlo, tibetanos en todo el Tíbet se han alzado contra la ocupación china de nuestra patria para mostrar al mundo que, a cinco meses de los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín, la situación en el Tíbet es crítica y exige atención internacional,” dijo Lhadon Tethong, director ejecutivo de Students for a Free Tibet. “Las políticas represiva china a lo largo de los años, las denuncias repetidas del Dalai Lama, y la violenta respuesta a las manifestaciones pacíficas de monjes al principio de la semana han agravado la tensión y la desesperación que sienten tibetanos en todo el Tíbet."

En Labrang, en la parte oriental del Tíbet (hoy día la provincial de Gansu), 3,000 personas se han manifestado hoy en las calles, y según el Centro Tibetano para los Derechos Humanos y la Democracia hay disturbios en todo Kham
(hoy día la provincia de Sichuan) y Amdo (provincia de Qinghai) ambas provincias del Tíbet. La Embajada Estadounidense en Pekín ha declarado haber “recibido noticias de primera mano de ciudadanos americanos en la ciudad sobre tiros y otras indicaciones de violencia.” Los gobiernos extranjeros han pedido al Gobierno chino que muestre control y han emitido instrucciones para viajeros a la Región Autónoma del Tíbet.

“China ha inundado al Tíbet con colonos chinos, ha gastado dinero en proyectos gigantescos como el ferrocarril que solidifiquen su control, y ha atacado sin piedad la cultura y la religión tibetanas,"dijo Tenzin Dorjee, vice director de Students for a Free Tibet. “Al acercarse los Juegos Olímpicos y centrarse los ojos del mundo sobre Pekín, esta muestra de frustración es una consecuencia natural.”

El Dalai Lama, líder espiritual del Tíbet en el exilio, pidió al Gobierno chino que “deje de utilizar la fuerza y que resuelva el continuado resentimiento del pueblo tibetano.” Junto con exiliados tibetanos en todo el mundo, tibetanos en el Tíbet lanzaron las protestas el lunes para marcar el 49º aniversario del fallido levantamiento popular tibetano.

“Tanto la fecha como la escala de estos disturbios por todo el Tíbet indican que se está llevando a cabo un verdadero levantamiento nacional tibetano contra la ocupación ilegal del Tíbet,” añadió el Sr Dorjee.

TIBETANS RESUME PEACEFUL MARCH TO TIBET
In wake of China's brutal crackdown inside Tibet, 44 marchers defy Indian government protest ban on Tibetans

Dehra, India – A day after the Chinese government's violent siege in Lhasa, a second wave of Tibetan exiles defied Indian government orders by resuming their March to Tibet this morning. While 102 Tibetan marchers remain under judicial detention, a second group of 44 Tibetans set out just before 10:00am from Dehra, the same location where the first group was arrested on Thursday. Sources from Tibet are reporting up to 100 and possibly more Tibetans killed in Lhasa yesterday, while in other parts of Tibet protest marches continued.

"The brave protests by Tibetans inside Tibet have made us more determined to see this March through to the end," said Chime Youngdrung, President of the National Democratic Party of Tibet, and one of the marchers. "As we witness a violent escalation on the part of the Chinese government in Lhasa, we know that it is even more important now for us to complete this march and return to our home to be reunited with our brothers and sisters who are battling to survive under Chinese occupation."

On the fourth day of the March to Tibet, on orders from the Central Government, Indian police detained 100 Core Marchers, plus two of the March organizers. For the past six days, the world has responded with an outpouring of support for the Marchers; Tibetans and supporters have sent numerous messages of solidarity and Human Rights Watch Asia yesterday called on the Indian authorities to release them and "lift the restraining order and the allow the march to continue peacefully."

Chinese authorities have responded with lethal force this week to ongoing protests in Lhasa and across Tibet. Supported by tanks, thousands of armed troops have sealed off the three major monasteries where nonviolent protests were initiated on Monday. Police have fired live ammunition into crowds of unarmed Tibetans.

"The Chinese government has been trying to use the Olympics to promote itself in a new light but its crackdown in Lhasa shows the true face of China's brutal rule in Tibet" said B. Tsering, President of the Tibetan Women's Association. "United as never before, Tibetans and our supporters around the world are standing together to demand freedom and human rights in Tibet."

Like the first 100 marchers, the second group of marchers received training in non-violent resistance and discipline. They attended a three-day nonviolence training from March 6 to 8, 2008, at Dolmaling Nunnery, near Dharamshala.
