A LOST LOVE
By Martin Douglas
Mary and Chris have been best friends for a long time. Chris
is dating his high school sweetheart Rachel while trying to
help Mary find someone for herself. What he doesn't know is
that Mary has fallen deeply in love with him. Mary is hoping
that Chris and his girlfriend break up so that she can have
a chance at a life with him. Mary is currently waiting at a
restaurant to have dinner with him.
INT. RESTAURANT -- EVENING
Mary sits running her finger along the top of a wine glass
while waiting for Chris. He enters the restaurant, sees
her, and hurries over.
MARY
I thought you'd never get here.
CHRIS
Same here. Traffic was bad on the
way down. Sorry I'm late.
MARY
I guess I can forgive you this time
but next time you'll owe me.
CHRIS
Fair enough. Did you order yet?
MARY
Nope, I'd never do anything without
my special man sitting beside me.
CHRIS
Ha ha very funny. Speaking of men,
did you meet anyone at the party
last night?
MARY
A couple but they weren't exactly my
type. They turned out to be the
usual scum bags. The kind that are
just looking for a piece of ass.
CHRIS
Isn't that how life is? Don't worry
about it, just keep looking. I'm
sure you'll find someone soon enough.
MARY
I know.

MARY (CONT'D)
I guess I'm just hoping that perfect
person is going to fall right into
my lap. You know what I mean? I
want it to be just like in the movies.
I'm walking down the street and I
bump into some tall handsome man who
sweeps me off my feet. We fall deeply
in love and spend the rest of our
lives together.
CHRIS
Speaking of that, guess what happened
to me last night.
MARY
What?
CHRIS
I asked Rachel to marry me.
MARY
You did what?
CHRIS
You should have seen the look on her
face. She couldn't believe it.
When I handed her the ring I thought
she was going to pass out.
MARY
Chris are you sure you should have
done that?
CHRIS
Of course. I'm crazy about this
girl. I can't stand being away from
her for more than a few seconds.
It's like a piece of my heart is
missing when she's not there. Do
you know how great a feeling it is
to wake up every morning next to the
person you love more than anything
else in the world?
MARY
But Chris you barely even know her?!
CHRIS
What are you talking about? I've
known her since high school.
MARY
Yeah but you just got together again
a few months ago. You don't know
what kind of person she is anymore.

MARY (CONT'D)
For all you know she could be after
you money.
CHRIS
Mary I've dated her on and off since
high school. It's been seven years.
So what if it only got serious in
the last couple of months. And what
the hell do you mean she could be
after my money? I live in an
apartment for god's sake and I drive
a yugo. Not to mention I have nothing
in the bank. What the hell is there
for her to take?
MARY
Chris I...I just think she's a mean
person and I don't like her, okay?
She's not your type. I think you'd
be better off with someone else.
CHRIS
Not my type? What the fuck are you
talking about? Why don't you tell
me who is my type. What, someone
like you? Someone who sits at home
all the time complaining about how
they can't meet anyone. Is that my
type?
MARY
Chris I didn't mean it that way.
It's just that...
CHRIS
Just what? That you can't stand
seeing someone else happy?
MARY
No, it's not that...It's just
that...Chris there's something I
have to tell you.
CHRIS
Save it. I don't want to hear it.
Call me when you have something nice
to say.
Chris gets up from the table and starts to leave.
MARY
But Chris...
CHRIS
Better yet, don't call me at all!
