From the FreeTime section of todays Star/Trib "If Dave Pirner looks more out of it than usual at Soul Asylum's free Rib Fest Gig tonight on Nicollet Mall, don't blame openers Cowboy Mouth and their notorious swamp grown pot. Pirner and longtime girlfriend Karen Brady have a 2-week-old son, Elijah Ray Pirner, at home. The couple splits their time between his home and hers (New Orleans). While Pirner took time off for the birth, Dan Murphy was stuck healing a broken arm. The Soul Asylum Guitarist had to miss some tour gigs, but the band reportedly made the best of it: They enlisted pals Jim Boquist, Kraig Johnson and SA guitar tech John (Woody) Woodson to fill in, including one show with all three. Murphy's first gig back is tonight.
4/16/03: Happy b-day Dave, we are all getting older.
4/15/03:Happy tax day! Check out Pollstar for a handfull of new shows. If anyone has any info on the new record drop me a line.
12/04/02:Hello all. It looks live we have received an early Christmas present from SA this year. MP3.com has a studio recording of Oxygen, a song that will most likely appeear on the next record.
Also, for you Floridians, check PollStar for 3 Dave Pirner show dates in January. Thats it for now.I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season.
11/04/02: Soul Asylum played a 5 song set today in MN at a Walter Mondale rally to encourage people to get out and vote. A new show was announced foe New Years Eve in ST> Paul, tickets will be $50 a pice. Thats all for now. 10/09/02: Isn't it about time to show Soul Asylum our appretiation for all of the covers they've given us? The Covers Project
9/17/02: Hello, nothing new to report. However, there is a new poll in the Other section. Two weeks ago I was in Green Bay for a Gin Blossoms show and asked them how their experience with SA in Texas was, they said they would take them with them everywhere if they could. I like the Blossoms and all but I think SA is moving forward and not living off of past glory.
SA has a show coming up in New Orleans pretty quick other than that things seem quiet for the moment. If anyone has some updates drop me an email. tied2thetracks@hotmail.com.
8/5/02: Hello, I came across a copy the Philly show set list nothing really different except Dave threw in Fearless Leader, a personal favorite of mine, I never heard of them playing it at a show before. Well anyways here it is:
Feel the Need Teach me to Breathe
I'll Have My Day
Tea
Faces and Names
Much Too Easy
364
Someday Love
Levitation
Volunteer
Keep Coming Back
Gone Till November
Fearless Leader
Never Recover
Cuz I Got High
One thing I forgot to mention from the Chicago show is the next single. Dave said if there is one it will probally be Teach Me To Breath.
It is a good song, I don't think its single worthy though.
8/4/02: Hi, Perry Noid was kind enough to write a reveiw for the DC Dave Pirner show. Here it is.
Dave Pirner 8/2/02 at the 9:30 club in Washington DC (by perrynoid)
Dave Pirner took the stage around 11:45pm with 3 other musicians. ( I apologize for not knowing who they are, but they were mindblowing) Dave simply walked on stage, thanked the folks for coming out and said "we're The Humps" & broke into FEEL THE NEED from his first full length solo cd Faces & Names. The overall sound was AMAZING! "The Humps" did a fabulous job filling the night with soulful vibes that had everyone groovin' & smiling. Next on the setlist was TEACH ME TO BREATHE (my personal fav from the cd) I was honestly suprised how well these songs were translated live with a simple 4 piece band. In between songs, Mr. Pirner seemed a bit nervous & even shy at times wich just adds to his charisma. Lets face it, Dave Pirner is one of the worlds best songwriters the world has ever known , and it almost seems like he isn't even aware of this. He was meeting fans before & after the show and as usual, was very kind and generous with his time. The guy is a true class act. By the time the chorus of the next song I"LL HAVE MY DAY rolled around, Dave was "in the zone" and so were the fans.. The CD's first single NEVER RECOVER was saved for the end of the night and received a tremendous response from the diverse crowd of people in attendance..
Here is the entire setlist:
FEEL THE NEED
TEACH ME TO BREATHE
I'LL HAVE MY DAY
TEA
FACES & NAMES
MUCH TO EASY
Treat DA BEATLES WHITE (start treating people right)
364
SOMEDAY LOVE (Dave breaks out the trumpet!!!)
LEVITATION
VOLUNTEER
KEEP COMING BACK
GONE TILL NOVEMBER
CUZ I GOT HIGH ( VERY WELL DONE)
All in all, it was a great night. Very different then a Soul Asylum gig. Dave was on the ball & it showed. The guy just keeps writing brilliant songs and entertaining fans. I hope this isn't his last solo CD. I think the guy is just getting started!
7/31/02: Hello, Yesterday I have the pleasure of seeing Mr.Pirner in Chicago. The band sounded great and were friendly. I got to hang out with a very patient Dave(And his girl friend) after the show. This was one of the best shows I've been to in a while, Dave was on top of his game and having fun.
here is the set list:
feel the need teach me to breath i'll have my day, tea, faces&names, much too easy, treat da beatles white(as it was on the set list)start treating people right, 364, someday love, levetation, volunteer, keep coming back, gone till november, never recover, cuz i got high(it was actually pretty good)
Andy if you are reading this get ahold of me at tied2thetracks@hotmail.com if you were serious about trading.
I was a big geek last night and got autographs(like I said Dave was patient)THe new CD, the single, a Dave Pirner T-Shirt, some promo poster they gave me, the set list and my favorite, the 1995 tour rider, dave wrote on it "The Book Of Lies" you gotta love it. Thats all for now, I hope I make it to goose Island.
7/3/02: Happy 4th of July. Sorry for the lack of updates(I thought unemployment would give me more free time) It was a rocking show last night despite a few assholes in the crowd.(when you come for the beer and not the band its to be expected) I did't have much time for Dave but I got a little info out of him. It doesn't look like Ian will be returning, Dave said he has been AWOL and they haven't heard from him. The new drummer sounded sharp and as SA fans we have grown used to drummer change ups.
I asked Dave if he had a follow up single to Never Recover picked out, I think he said no."Dude the record isn't even out yet!" Pretty much the standard set list last night, here it is to the best of my memorey:
sometime to return, see ya later, someone to shove, cartoon, string of pearls, close, summer of drugs, runaway train, oxygen, showtime, without a trace, just like anyone, black gold, misery, and candy from a stranger.
Oncore: Rhinestone Cowboy & Ramblin rose.
Thats all for now, the Solo show dates are listed on Davepirner.com.
6/14/02: Hello, its been a while, since my life has become nooks and diaper changes I haven't been around to update, that and the fact there hasn't been any news.
Never Recover is now getting radio play in some parts of the country, you can get a request list on DavePirner.com. Me and our friend Tim are getting ready to check out SA at Summerfest next month so hopefully we can get some new info for you. Tomorrow we will be seeing the Honey Dogs in Manitowoc(WI)that should be a good time.
One last update, we have a set list from the Long Beach show:Sometime To Return See Ya Later Shove Oxygen Black Gold Close Cartoon Misery BittersweetHeart Runaway Train String Of Pearls wihtout a trace candy from a stranger Just Like Anyone
5/20/02: Thanks to Dave T. we have a reveiw of the DC show!
Sometime to Return Somebody to Shove ? (new song) Black Gold Runaway Train Cartoon I Will Still be Laughing Without a Trace Misery Just Like Anyone No encore. Good show, the venue wasn't the best---the show was run by DC-101, a local radio station. They closed off several blocks of Pennsylvania Ave. and the sound a little muddy, but you could see the Capitol behind the stage and the band, so that was pretty cool. Several other bands played, including Pete Yorn, Puddle of Mudd and Remy Zero. SA played third to last, right before Puddle of Mudd and right after Pete Yorn.
Thanks Dave!
5/15/02 I recived a surprise phone call from Dave Pirner last night. Back in December he agreed to an interveiw, he caught me off gaurd so I didn't have all my questions ready. Anyways I hope you can find somthing you didn't about Soul Asylum in it.

3/30/02: Thanks to our good friend Tim we have a set list from Luthers Blues, the new pics you see and will be seeing shortly are also from Tim,what a great guy.
Here's the set straight from setlist although they didn't stick to the order and omitted one or two: sometime to return, see ya later, shove, laughing, bittersweet heart, oxygen-- ( I think this has become the highlight of every show for me! Maaaan, does this rock!) cartoon, black gold, close, string of pearls, hallowed ground-- (couldn't understand one word of this song this time around but it still strikes me as really cool. Dave said the lyrics are still changing all the time,) misery (no silly love songs this time), showtime (Karl's big moment in the spotlight!!), runaway train, without a trace ( I don't think actually they played this one), summer of drugs, slowly rising, candy, just like anyone, encore: (I'm forgetting one song here) The Cure's Just Like Heaven (I thought this really rocked…and I hate the Cure!), backdoor man
3/22/01: A quick DP update from CD Now.
Former Soul Asylum singer Dave Pirner will finally have his debut solo album on store shelves. The self-produced, not-yet-titled album is due in either late June or early July on indie label Ultimatum. Pirner recorded the disc in Kingsway Studios in New Orleans with a guest appearance by singer-songwriter Chris Whitley. "Never Recover" is the first single from the album.
I have no idea why they said former SA singer.
