These are just a couple of normal everyday type heating pads. You can pick them up at just about any grocery store or Wal-Mart type stores.
We are using 2 heating pads because we are using a 40 gallon aquarium. We are using the 40 gallon aquarium because we have it. If you have a 10 or a 20 gallon aquarium they will work also. But the big tank is great for more than 1 or 2 clutches
Here we have the aquarium sitting on the 2 heating pads. Note the area not covered by heating pads. This is so the babies can wander into this area to cool off if they feel they are to warm in the area over the heating pads.
Line the bottom of the aquarium with newspaper. this will aid in cleaning later. And it also does double duty as insulation.
We use a divider to separate the babies from the humidity source. That is if you decide you need one. The divider is just an aquarium underground filter with plastic straws attached to the sides. This is to provided a gasket and to help the divider stay in place.
Here we have the divider installed. The plastic straws are used to create a gasket so the divider will stay in place.
Allthough we have had a bad experience with wood chips, 1 baby out of 100+ tried to ingest a wood chip and got it caught in it's mouth somehow and died. We will still use wood chips, the shaved pine stuff. We will make absolute sure that the young babies have no access to these chips. Wood chips are very very good in radiating the heat, and they are also very good insulation. So we had to weigh the pros and cons of the situation and the wood chips won.
