Who and why of what we are:
We are Cheryl & Larry Scott. We live in Kingsville, Texas. We have a Chihuahua puppy dog, Tequila, that lives with us and he believes he almost has us trained.
Along with the dog we have a few birds, two quaker parakeets, one white eyed conure and sometimes I don't know how many cockatiels we have. I do believe that we have 20 plus cockatiels at this moment (41).
We are hobbyist breeders of the different cockatiel mutations. What that means is that we try to breed to get a specific color mutation. Our first endeavor was to try for a lutino baby. We did not know anything about the genetics thing all we had was one lutino female cockatiel and a normal gray tiel. We thought this combination would work. Well we tried for this for a couple years. All we got were normal grays and some lightly split to pied babies.
We eventually did a little investigation on the subject and discovered we were not working with the right tools. We did try breeding one of the sons back to the mother, but that didn't seem to be working either. We purchased a lutino baby from one of people that had purchased some birds from us. When we got home with this little 3 week old lutino chick we discovered that we had, had one of our other cockatiel's eggs hatch. Guess what it was a lutino baby.
We eventually moved on to trying to get fallows and that was a success except for the fact that the babies weren't as strong as we felt they should have been. But we had accomplished our goal. We are grooming the two breeders to make them better and healthier and we will give the fallow thing another shot.
We are currently working on getting an albino, which in all reality is a lutino whiteface. The tools you have to have are a white face female bred to a normal male. And a whiteface male bred to a normal lutino hen. You are then supposed to mate the offspring of the different clutches to produce a whiteface lutino. Well our whiteface hen is doing her part fine. We have had 3 clutches from her. But our whiteface male (Odoe) has yet to produce. We have our hopes up for this coming year. We did get a 3 month old normal whiteface in case our, Odoe, doesn't do what he is suppose to this year. This is not a fast paced avocation but it is fun and interesting.
Along with the white faces and lutinos and fallows we do breed for pearls and pieds and pearl/pieds.
With all this breeding we do get some extra birds around here. We have to sell some of these birds or we would be over run with cockatiels. With the proceeds we do get to update our equipment and get better stock. But the best part of selling the extra birds is that we get to share our little delights with friends and neighbors. We feel bad we are not into shipping our birds as of yet, so we are not able to.
We intend and are planning on a move to the Dallas / Fort Worth area sometime in the near future. Once we make the move we do plan on entering the bird shows. At the present we are located so far away from most of the bird shows that the travel time really prohibits this part of breeding and raising birds. But we do have faith and we do intend on doing this. We know that our bird pals here are winners....
