The Next One Steps Forward

Intense blue eyes narrowed. "No."

Jonathan Turner stepped back at the strength behind the girl's negative answer. "You don't understand, Alyscia. You are the Slayer. You don't have a choice. It's your destiny."

Alyscia Miller rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "I am *not* going to play Slayer girl."

"But a Slayer is important on the Hellmouth. That's what you live on, you must realize, the mouth of Hell. And..." He paused, seeing the bored look on her face. "How come I have a feeling you already know this?"

Alyscia laughed, flipping her long red braid over her shoulder. "Did you do *any* research on the new Slayer, or did the Council just ship you here seriously this stupid?"

Jonathan blinked in surprise. This certainly was not what he was expecting. "I..."

"God. After all this time. I can't believe they are as stupid as mom says they are."

"You...know?" Jonathan asked.

"Duh. My Aunt Buffy was the greatest Slayer that ever lived. I can't believe you came all the way to Sunnydale and didn't even check out who your Slayer was. Anyway, it doesn't matter, because I'm not doing it."

"You have to, Alyscia. Whether you want to or not. You are the Chosen One."

"Whatever," she said, turning around and walking away from the man who would become her Watcher.

*-*-*-*

Alyscia Miller was pissed. She wasn't supposed to be the Slayer. After the last one died, she had decided she would wait to find out who the next one was and befriend her, hoping she could help the Slayer with her magic, just as her mom had helped Buffy twenty years prior.

Imagine her shock when the tweed wearing Jonathan Turner stepped out of the shadows and said the *she* was the Slayer. "Great. Just great. Mom and dad are going to flip."

"Flip about what, Aly?"

Alyscia turned, narrowing her eyes at Forrest Finn, Buffy and Riley's oldest child. "Oh, goddess, Forrest, go away. Just leave me alone." Inside, she was shocked she was sending Forrest away -- they were best friends, but she had loved him since before she could remember. He had his dad's build, and his mom's eyes, and was, simply put, gorgeous.

"Woah, what's your problem?"

"*You* are my problem. *Your mother* is my problem. Your whole family!"

Forrest blinked. "Hey, now, Alyscia, calm down. What the hell did my family do to you?"

"Your mom had to go be the Slayer."

Forrest frowned. "Mom hasn't been the Slayer since they retired her. What's that got to do with..." His eyes widened. "Oh, no, you?"

"Yea," Alyscia grumbled. "I'm the Slayer."

"Like hell you are!"

"What?" Alyscia asked, feeling her temper rise again. It was one of the traits she got from her mom -- she *was* a spitfire. "You don't think I can do it?"

"Huh? Oh, no, I know you could. I just...I don't want you to get hurt." He frowned.

"Hey, Aly, big brother, whas' up?" a voice said, coming up to greet them.

Alyscia leaned over and hugged her best friend and Forrest's twin, Jennifer Finn. "My life sucks, Jenny," Alyscia said.

"What? Why?" Jenny asked, concerned for Alyscia. < I bet Forrest said something stupid to hurt her feelings again. >

"She is the Slayer," Forrest said.

"Oh my god," Jenny said softly, her face registering shock. "Just like mom."
