How do we work?

Our projects aim to elevate the quality of life for the local population, whilst protecting and respecting their traditions and costums. The participacion of the community is vital for the succes and continuity of the projects.

In this, we want to make use of the concept of 'communal labour', where all the people work for the good of the whole community, an old tradition dating back to pre-Inca times.

Next to health and education, an important pillar of our work is nutrition. In the highlands and the jungle, people have very poor diets, mainly consisting of potatoes or yucca, rice and mais, and little red meat, fruit or vegetables.

This results in malnutrition which causes all sorts of problems, for example during pregnancies, and can lead to serious and life threatening diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumonia. In the children it can lead to vitamine and mineral deficiancies that will cause them to have difficulties in learning, memorizing and developing a range of skills.

In order to involve the children in our projects, we work together with the schools in environ- mental education and build ecological gardens, greenhouses and small farms (guinnee pigs, rabbits, chicken) around the colleges.

In this way the children will learn how to grow vegetables and fruits, take care of the animals, and at the same time they will receive basic nutrition through their schools.

Often, the children have to come from far to their schools, for example in the rainforest, and in their homes they don't receive a proper breakfast. This can be compensated by the schools in this way.
