What is a Tiffany Product?

Any lighting fixture that utilizes hand cut art or stained glass and is assembled by hand has become generically known as a Tiffany lamp. This may also include glass panels, semi flushes, animals and any other decorative product that uses stained glass as part of the design in the item. An authentic Tiffany product, depending on condition would be auctioning or selling for thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, this would be dependant upon the quantity available and condition of the fixture.
Tiffany produced many different types of items in his factories after the turn of the century to include glass panels, vases, candle sticks and other decorative product. An original Tiffany product will have had a small brass tag soldered to the inside of the shade rim with the initial "LCT" or the full name spelled out, so this would be an indication of the origin. Beware though, because of the collectibility and popularity of any thing from the original Tiffany factory's have spawned many imitations. A reputable antique dealer will be able to determine the authenticity of an original.
Original Tiffany products do pop up in the most unexpected places though. I had dealt with a customer who came in to one of our retail stores to look at Tiffany style lighting that we had on display, and in the course of our conversation she mentioned that her uncle who had passed away was an antique collector and had bequeathed the entire collection to her. She went on to mention that while going through the items she noticed a small table lamp that was produced in stained glass. I than asked her where the uncle was from and she replied the new York area. I knew that Tiffany operated out of new York and told her that she should have the fixture looked at by an appraiser. Sure enough she came back to the store a couple of months later and told me that the fixture was indeed an original Tiffany lamp, and while she did not mention what she received for it she did tell me that the proceeds took care of all her veterinarian school loans.
So you never know what you will come across when you least expect it.
