Julie Harris, one of this nation's most distinguished actresses, was born in Gross Point Park, Michigan in December 9, and began her studies at Miss Hewitt's School in New York City. Miss Harris, a five-time Tony Award-winner and two-time Emmy Award-winner, has joined the cast of Lorimar's weekly network television drama series "Knots Landing" on CBS-TV as Lilimae Clements, a down-trodden, aspiring, country & western singer and the mother of Valene Ewing (Joan Van Ark). Miss Harris has joined "Knots Landing" as it begins its third season on the network. After graduating from Miss Hewitt's School, she enrolled in the Yale Drama School but midway through her first year, she read for a role in the Broadway production, "It's a Gift," a comedy, and won the part. That she chose the right vocation is evidenced in her achievements. Miss Harris holds five Tony Awards for her brilliant stage work and two Emmy's for her outstanding television contributions. Her Tony Awards were for "I Am a Camera" (1951), as Joan of Ark in "The Lark" (1955), "Forty Carats" (1968), "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" (1972 and, "The Belle of Amherst" (1976). Her Emmy Awards were for two Hallmark Hall of Fame specials; "Little Moon of Alban" (1958) and "Victoria Regina" (1961). Julie Harris is also reknowned for her motion picture successes which include such outstanding performances in "The Member of the Wedding," "I am a Camera," "East of Eden," "The Trouble with Women," "Reflections in a Golden Eyes," "Requiem for a Heavyweight" and "Harper," among others. Miss Harris is the mother of one son, Peter. She is 5'4" tall, weighs 110 lbs and has reddish blonde hair and blue eyes. She enjoys reading 19th Century American literature, tennis, cooking, gardening, knitting and listening to jazz blues singers and New Orleans style jazz. |
