The new Millennium might
be underway, but there is nothing new about Juventus' hunger for success.
After the New Year celebrations, all thoughts are turning to the Serie
A restart. Alessandro Del Piero is the man who has most captured the press'
imagination this morning. "Other clubs may be buying new players, but we
don't need to do that; we are fine as we are," Del Piero told the Gazzetta
dello Sport. "We have heard a lot about Seedorf and Rivaldo lately. Big-name
players are always good news, but Juventus has got plenty of those already.
I don't think we have any gaps, either at the back or up front." Del Piero
also reflected on his season so far: "I think I have performed well for
this team over the last couple of months. As a child, I wanted to be a
footballer. Failing that, a lorry driver or a chef." As the Gazzetta rightly
points out, many non-European players are currently away on international
duty. Sunday Oliseh, for instance, will not be available to Carlo Ancelotti
on 6 January.
The Del Piero theme continues
in the Corriere dello Sport, where the Bianconeri Number 10 declares, "I
want to stay at Juventus for ever. If they wanted me to serve on the Board
of Directors, I would happily do so. But before then, I think I've got
about another 12 years' playing time!" Del Piero was also quick to play
down Lazio's two-point lead.
Tuttosport, meanwhile, concentrates
on Igor Tudor, so impressive in the first half of the season. A new contract
seems likely. "Juventus is a great learning ground for me," Tudor told
the Turin-based daily. "I am in no hurry to gain a permanent first-team
place. Every match I play in the Juve shirt is a special one for me."
