ROME - Lazio striker Simone
Inzaghi received his first international call-up on Saturday, when Italy
coach Dino Zoff named him in a 22-man squad to face Spain in a friendly
next week.
Inzaghi, who bagged four
goals for Lazio in a 5-1 defeat of Olympique Marseille in the Champions
League this month and another in their 2- defeat of Chelsea in midweek,
joins his brother Filippo for Wednesday's match in Barcelona.
The brothers, whose club
sides meet in a key Serie A clash next Saturday, have never played together
at senior level.
Zoff dropped former Real
Madrid right back Christian Panucci for the trip and appears likely to
start the match with a three-man defence of Ciro Ferrara of Juventus, AC
Milan captain Paolo Maldini and Parma's Fabio Cannavaro.
Maldini's long-time teammate,
Demetrio Albertini, returns after being dropped for Italy's 1-0 defeat
of Sweden in a friendly last month, as do Inter Milan's Luigi Di Biagio
and experienced right-sided midfielder Diego Fuser.
Juventus pairing Filippo
Inzaghi and Alessandro Del Piero will almost certainly start up front with
Simone Inzaghi perhaps getting a chance to play alongside his brother later
in the tie.
Zoff is without five players
for the trip to Spain.
Former Atletico Madrid striker
Christian Vieri picked up a thigh injury in Inter Milan's 1-0 defeat at
Lecce on Saturday while AS Roma's Vincenzo Montella was injured in the
Rome derby, which Lazio won 2-1.
Parma's Dino Baggio, Juve's
Antonio Conte and Lazio centre-back Alessandro Nesta were already on the
injury list.
