Alex Del Piero predictably
takes centre stage in today's papers after breaking his goal-scoring drought
after no less than 566 days, with a header against Parma yesterday.
Tuttosport starts the Del
Piero bandwagon rolling, its headline "Alex: Triumph!" unequivocal. After
a year-and-a-half in the goal-scoring wilderness Alex has netted that elusive
first goal from open play, so crucial to the Bianconeri's Scudetto charge.
Over to Del Piero himself in the Turin-based daily: "I'd like to thank
all the fans for their patience." Carlo Ancelotti was thrilled with his
charges and admitted to being emotionally and physically drained.
More of the same in the Gazzetta
dello Sport, its headline stressing the impeccable timing of the goal:
"The perfect moment". For Del Piero himself, the team comes unswervingly
first: "For me the goal is a watershed but the win is the main thing."
Umberto Agnelli, the club's
honorary president was the first to congratulate Alex in the Corriere dello
Sport: "He has been to hell and back and this is the just reward for his
efforts." The final word in the Rome-based daily goes to the Coneglaino-born
striker: "The best present would have been if my goal clinched the Scudetto
but I can't complain. How many days was it, 566? Well, I think there are
least 566 people I would like to thank for their total support: I have
not heard a single fan jeer me." And so say all of us.
