France striker David Trezeguet
will complete his transfer from Monaco to Juventus today, reports the Gazzetta
dello Sport. Scorer of the golden goal that defeated Italy in Sunday's
Euro 2000 Final, Trezeguet arrives in Turin with his reputation, if not
his popularity, riding high. "I have always believed in myself, and this
has paid off," he tells the paper. "I am ready for the challenge of Juventus;
I want to make it in Italian football."
But they are a forgiving
lot at the Delle Alpi. Or so you would think listening to Carlo Ancelotti
wax lyrical about his latest signing: "He is a spectacular player. What
you saw the other night was not a one-off; it's just a shame it was against
Italy."
Rotterdam may have been the
highlight of Trezeguet's career, but for Alessandro Del Piero it was the
nadir. The headline in the Corriere dello Sport says as much: "Del Piero:
I have lost everything." Now, now, Alex, things can't be that bad - can
they? "It was the worst night imaginable," he explains. "This year I have
missed out on the Scudetto, and been only seconds away from the European
Championships. It's going to be hard to pick myself up after this."
Del Piero's world fell apart
after he missed two gilt-edged chances to put Italy into what would have
been an insuperable 2-0 lead. Now he replaces team-mate Filippo Inzaghi
as everybody's favourite Aunt Sally. For the time being at any rate.
Light relief is provided
in Tuttosport, that serial flogger of dead horses. The paper is convinced
Juventus are chasing the Udinese playmaker Stefano Fiore, while suggesting
that Lazio's Marcelo Salas is another possible target.
