Totti, one of the protagonists of the match, has his own opinion about the game: “We began very well, with a few great plays especially during the first half. In the end Hungary scored a goal we could’ve avoided, but we are pleased anyway.” Totti goes on to explain the action which led to Italy’s first goal: “I was running down the wing when I saw Inzaghi. Getting the ball to him wasn’t easy, but I tried and it went well. I’m happy Pippo scored.“ About Del Piero, Totti comments: “An attacker who doesn’t score always suffers, this is why we have to support him and I’m sure he’ll recover his former shape”.

Lazio defender Alessandro Nesta agrees with his team-mate: “We played a good first half, but in the second we weren’t as convincing. We knew this could happen as this was the first full match we‘ve played so far and we’re still not all at 100%.. Modern football requires excellent athletic conditions, as soon as we’ve recovered our shape you’ll see what we can do”.

About Del Piero, Nesta says: “He’s only unlucky. You all saw that the ball bounced in a funny way in front of him. It’s just a question of misfortune”.

Toldo adds: “Del Piero has to be patient. I’m sure he’ll make it”.

Italian Manager Giovanni Trapattoni seems satisfied with the match against Hungary, albeit a little disappointed with the final result: “This draw penalises us somewhat, especially in consideration of the clear occasions to score we had during the game with Del Piero and Inzaghi".

As far as Del Piero is concerned, Trapattoni adds: Alex played well. He played a good match, although he was tired towards the end, like most players.

Trapattoni is then informed that Rumania beat Lithuania in the other match of the round:” You want to know if I’m worried about the match in S. Siro? All games are important. Even tonight’s draw away from home is significant”.
