Alessandro Del Piero has been on the receiving end in recent months. Less well documented, however, are the messages of support the Juventus man has received from all quarters.

Here at juventus.com we have been inundated with email for the striker - revealing how Del Piero’s appeal transcends inter-club rivalries. Only the truly great players command such respect.

"It's encouraging to know how many people support me," he acknowledged. "It is a big help to know people are behind me. But there are so many messages it's impossible to answer them individually.”

Del Piero admits to being sports daft. So with Australia set to light its Olympic flame, he is looking forward to curling up in front of the TV.

“It is a great event, a very special festival of sport bringing together many different disciplines,” he said. “It would be great to follow it all, but if I had to choose I'd opt for the sprints and the relays.”

Del Piero also accepted an invitation from Jean Alesi to visit the Monza circuit ahead of Sunday’s Formula 1 Grand Prix.

"Unfortunately it was a brief visit, because I had to train with Juve. But it was great to learn something about the sport. I wanted to show my support for Jean. Of course, I back Jean as a driver, but I'm a Ferrari fan - so good luck to Ferrari!"
