The
return or otherwise of Paolo Montero to strengthen Carlo Ancelotti's defensive
options against Udinese on Wednesday and the closing days of the transfer
window take precedence in today's press stories. The Gazzetta dello Sport
speaks of a 'countdown' until Montero's return. Against Udinese the Milan
pink suggests he will be given a place on the subs bench against those
other Bianconeri of the Italian top flight. The real objective is that
the Uruguayan should return for the crucial match against Panathinaikos
in Athens next week.
The
Rome-based Corriere dello Sport adds that another Uruguayan will join Montero
on the bench, Fabian O'Neill - who is also on his way back from injury.
Meanwhile Gianluca Zambrotta will be a starter, suggests the Corriere,
and Zinedine Zidane and Edgar Davids will be called upon to make amends
for their dismissals in the Champions League. The daily also points out
that Montero's return should prove an essential component for a defence
that has conceded 14 goals in only 10 matches.
Tuttosport
is the paper with the big story of the day, although you might like to
draw your own conclusions about its veracity. "Alex says, I'm going!" The
Juventus star, Alex Del Piero, considers a dramatic resolution to his current
problems. Were he not to re-discover his form he may take up the seductive
offers coming from Real Madrid or Barcelona, the only clubs - aside from
Milan - prepared to fork out the considerable amounts of money that signing
the Juve number 10 would involve.
On
the transfer front Patrick Vieira and Pablo Aimar are the central objectives,
although the Bianconeri are also set to mount an Atalanta offensive to
try and draw the Zenoni brothers away from the Bergamo club.
Zidane,
suggests the Turin daily, will be doing his utmost to ingratiate himself
with the fans after his costly dismissal against Hamburg in the League.
In Europe Ancelotti has a number of options: Del Piero behind a front two,
O'Neill in the Zizou role, or a classic 4-4-2.
Finally,
Filippo Inzaghi's four goals in the Champions League have not made the
fact that he has as yet failed to score in the first three matches in the
League any sweeter. SuperPippo has never gone the first four matches in
the League without a goal, so...watch out Udinese!
